Is Bullseye by Mainline public domain ?
« on: July 22, 2010, 05:56:41 AM »

I have scans of a couple of issues of Jack Kirby's comic Bullseye (#2 & #3).   These were published by Mainline Publications, Inc. in late 1954.

A while ago on the messageboard, someone indicated they would be willing to upload some Bullseye comics - but this never happened.   These are still not on the site.   To my knowledge there are no books on site with Mainline listed as publisher.

So my question is:  is Bullseye public domain ?   Can I upload these issues ?

No response to this post - so I'll answer it myself.

From "Poztron's uploads'' topic,  Boox had to reject Mainline's In Love #1 over pd issues.   On August 24, 2010, JVJ was kind enough to provide the information that Mainline was owned by Simon and Kirby  AND that Joe Simon has renewed copyright on all (or almost all) of their titles.

Therefore it is safe to assume that Bullseye is most likely either definitely copyrighted  or too questionable to be accepted by this site.

You make me sound like I am a bad guy.  :'( I love St. Kirby just as much as the next guy. We should all want to do right by him (and Simon) when possible.

Whoops. Boox.   Didn't mean to make you sound like a bad guy.

Perhaps I was too terse in my comments.   I know that no one at GAC has the time or resources to resolve every public domain question.  Also it makes no sense to risk possible legal action or a lawsuit just to test the waters on a questionable book.   Your not being able to accept ''In Love #1'' on this site was the only logical conclusion to me.   I doubt that anyone who has read this site's thorough discussions on the subject would disagree.

So once I was aware of Joe Simon's copyright renewals, the question about the Bullseye comics was automatically answered for me.   My comments were just my way of showing how I came to that answer.

Oh!  and I agree with your comments on Kirby and Simon.
