Dell's Our Gang Comics
« on: July 28, 2010, 03:20:26 PM »

I was perusing through my volumes of Fantagraphics' reprints of Walt Kelly's Our Gang feature from Dell's Our Gang Comics of the 1940s and noticed that there is no copyright assignment on the indicias other than that assigned to Fantagraphics for the current volumes unlike Fantagraphics recent volume reprinting Captain Easy which designates that the strips reprinted therein are copyrighted by United Features.

Does this mean that the original comics are now PD?  I realize that a number of the features in the comic were originally MGM properties but since then they have passed through various hands over the years so perhaps any renewals for such licensed properties as these comics got missed?

I wish these were public domain, but as far as we know they are not. Then again...I wonder.

I actually have a CD that I can enter in comic titles to determine if they are registered or renewed. I can look into it and post my results.

I believe when we last checked there were only a very few issues of Our Gang that were NOT renewed, most of them were.

One of the few issues that was clear was #6, which is why we could post the Albert story from that issue here.
