Howzabout a posting of the most disturbing elements found in the Golden Age? Those little bits that have not yet been cast into the perfect "super hero-ic" form?

My favorite: The bloodthirsty, kill-crazed Comet from Pep Comics. Here's a panel from Pep #01 in which he vaporizes a thug. Not a crazed killed, not a ringleader or dangerous unstoppable monster... just a garden-variety criminal henchman, who probably would have got 3-to-5 at worst.

Fiction House's early "Fight Comics" may have the most dizzying array of strangely nicknamed characters in comic-dom. With guys like "Frosty" North, "Struts" Warren, "Kinks" Mason, "Shark" Brodie, and "Chip" Collins, one has to wonder about these fellas family and friends.

I've always thought the name 'Spurt Hammond' in the Planet Comics was pretty unfortunate.
Maybe I've just got a dirty mind.

The Hangman splash pages for MLJ have got to be some of the more graphic examples of violence in comics as well.

I just downloaded Planet Comics #1 and I couldn't quite believe "Spurt" Hammond when I saw it either. That same issue had the Red Comet, a superhero-ish space explorer, growing to giant size and squashing an entire army with his feet!

You think with a face like that, he pretty much figured he was destined for murder anyway? (Of course, there's also the fact that he was born with the name Van Deth)

But not to worry, the bad guy (named Greaseball Bulloni, no kidding) receives his just rewards (after a fair trial, of course).

I don't have the cut-and-paste abilities here, but if you want some weirds, check out the original "Butterfly" story from CAPTAIN AMERICA #3. In the reprinted FANTASY MASTERPIECES version, Cap breaks off a mastodon's tusk in a museum and throws it at a bad guy's jaw, knocking him out. In the original, he throws it at and through the guy's chest and kills him...and it looks like Cap is smiling!

Also, my fave name for a villain comes from an ish of DAREDEVIL, I think, with a Little Wise Guys bad guy named...Spike Dork.

Really interesting choice, Misty. Asians in general come off quite badly in most Golden Age titles - the barely professional art certainly doesn't help matters here!

That page looked more like Fletcher Hanks' work than the more polished Nordling artwork I'm used to seeing. I wonder if anyone compared that story to any of Nordling's early Quality work of the period.

It's signed with the pen name F. Klaus, and he is credited with working on all the Lt. Drake of the U.S. Naval Intelligence. I was taken back when I first saw it, because it is so bad, but GCD (http://www.comics.org/details.lasso?id=943#7) says it's him. You're right though it does look more like Fletcher Hanks' art.

Could possibly still have been Hanks, if the "F. Klaus" was being used as a house name. A lot of folks worked under the "Simon and Kirby" banner, for example.

Being a huge Hanks fan who has read any all of the Hanks I can possible find I personally see zero Fletcher Hanks in this example.
As 'bad' as some think Hanks was he was still far more interesting and accomplished in his singular vision of how to present a story then the above page. This page was done by what I feel was a much less mature artist at the time it was done. Hanks was older than the average artist during his brief stay in comics and from what Eisner recalls and is reported in the 'I Shall Destroy...' novel he was able to produce on deadline a complete story from scratch. A rarity at the time. He may not have been a 'good' artist but one get's to be able to spot a story by him without much trouble. He kept that same characteristic technique no matter what the genre he was drawing. I see none of them in the above.

That's true, Fletcher Hanks had a very identifiable style that can clearly be seen in his pages. But looking at that page, it seemed that Klaus Nordling - at least on this strip - was trying to emulate what Hanks was doing in his own work. I can easily guess that Nordling eventually gave up on emulating Hanks' style and developed his own approach to comics as shown by his Quality work.
