John Carter of The Funnies
« on: September 15, 2011, 09:30:28 PM »

I run the John Carter of Mars wiki, and it has come to my attention that John Carter of Mars stories ran from the funnies issue 30-56

For research purposes I need these comics in some form

If I cannot find them here, I need a link to where I can get them

It is necessary that I read them to properly catalogue the information from the comics

Unfortunately John Carter is not public domain. You may want to contact Dell4Color as the expert on all things Dell

The first five books are in most countries

The Edgar Rice Burroughs Estates has not the funds nor enough desire to prevent people from posting this stuff

Example, Dynamite comics currently has three comic series out taking place on teh lovely world of barsoom, comletely unlicensed adn unauthorized

The B-grade film "a princess of mars" was unauthorized

there are books coming out that are unauthorized

the point . . . . it may technically be illegal . . . but nobody cares

Okay well, if what I need cannot be provided here . . . Is it possible that I could be pointed in the direction of similiar website such as this that archive golden age comics?

I'm sure if the Dell project scanners have these issues they will be scanned in their entirety and in their turn (public domain or no, though all golden age scanners are very careful to follow protocol on a site like this because we respect the rules).  I'm guessing that the issues are scarce and hard to find and not in possession of the Dell scanners at the moment. Otherwise, they'd be turning up.  In any event, I wouldn't expect all of these issues to just drop out of thin air because that's just not going to happen.  People have been and will be waiting for their pet titles to come in for years, patience...

Does the site also have Burroughs' John Carter comic strip?

Curious

Yes, those are the strips I was thinking of.  Thanks for providing the link.  I read some of them years ago in the Edgar Rice Burroughs Library of Illustration Vol 2.  IIRC, John Coleman Burroughs started the strip a few months after he finished his run of John Carter in Dell's The Funnies comic book.

It's interesting to see his progression as an artist from the earliest comic books in 1939 through the last of the strips in 1943.

Good luck on tracking down some of those missing issues of The Funnies and please keep us apprised of your progress and of any new additions to the ERBzine site.   Judging by the response on GAC and DCM they seem to be pretty rare so it sounds like it may take some time but I wish you all the best in this endeavor.

Joe.
