Not sure if it makes a difference, but I'm using a Mac ...

... since PDFs aren't used, what application is needed to view the scans?

If you're on a Mac, Comical is pretty good.  A free download when I got it--do a google search--it works fine on Mac Panther and Leopard--probably Tiger, too.

For leopard, also--you can use Comic Book Lover (i don't understand why these image viewers all have comic-related names--it's an image-viewer--can be used for all sorts of thing besides comics)....

You can Download a demo that works pretty well without too much fuss.  It's $25 to buy, I think--and I will do so soon, I promise.  It has some bells and whistles that Comical does not have.  Better overall, but try both and make up yer own mind.

Here's the viewers I know of for the Mac: ComicBookLover, FFView, Comical, Cooviewer, Comic Book Viewer and Simple Comic.
