Just in from Cape Town - Greetings to all
« on: February 25, 2013, 08:45:30 AM »

Hello Comic Creatures! I'm Dave (moonfeed) just arrived by train from Cape Town.
Very glad to be here, and I look forward to meeting members and to much discussion  :)
I'm working on my own original comics but very keen to study the classics here.

As kids in the '50s/60s, my brother and I preferred the British comics and annuals, such as Tiger; the Beano Book; Lion and Hurricane; Valiant; and The Hornet. But we also had Sad Sack, The Jetsons, Daffy Duck, The Flintstones, Superman, Batman, Archie, Mad Magazine, Richie Rich, Casper the Friendly Ghost, Donald Duck, and the one with Elmer Fudd, er, er, um....wot?  Plus much more.

Always pored over the tiny ads in the end-pages: Amaze Your Friends and Family with Hypnosis! Fool Your Family with Trick Soap! (My wife, in boarding school in Kenya, earned cash by writing stories for her friends, and then actually ordered the Trick Soap. Believe it or not,the stuff finally arrived at Nairobi Post Office  ;)

Welcome Dave we look forward to your participation in our conversation. I am sure you noticed our growing UK section. I ordered that wobbly ball and "real exploding" tanks. They were held together with a rubber band that would "explode" apart when you pushed the middle.

I remember my brother ordered the Sea Monkeys which turned out to be brine shrimp.  Also had a friend who ordered the "real submarine" which turned out to be made out of cardboard and dissolved into a pile of mush when he put it into a swimming pool.

Best

Welcome to CB+, Dave.  You might want a look at the back page of this British comic, just to bring back the memories.  ;D

But your part of the world had a few superhero comics of your own incl. Mighty Man and Tiger Ingwe, although I think they were drawn and packaged in the U.K for S.Africa.

An interesting history indeed.
Look forward to your posts in the forum.

Thank you narfstar! I already feel at home here :) My word, those exploding tanks. I remember them. Plastic, in a green/grey colour as I recall. How on earth we acquired 'em I can't remember. Oh. Now I recall that there was also a 25 pdr fieldgun, which fired a matchstick at the tank. Same as yours? Or different model?

No matchstick shooter with mine. There was some time of paper or plastic game board that you moved against the other player. If you blew up their tank you pushed the middle and the rubber band snapped. I remember that according to the rules if a players tank "exploded" when it was being moved it was considered destroyed.
