And, to start off your weekend right, how does 32 pages of never reprinted Walt Kelly sound?

Adventures of Peter Wheat 7 and 12 now ready for you to enjoy!

And Adventures of Peter Wheat 29 by Walt Kelly now ready for download!

It's amazing what happens when you get a dealer who doesn't know how to list their comics.  They described the book as nice, and said it was 14 pages.  I asked and got a confirmation that if you counted the cover it was 16; they never changed their listing and I won it for under $16 with shipping.

The book, when I got it, had one corner gently creased, along with a couple of small creases across the spine, you'll see them when you download it if you do.  And I added a light crease along the spine when I scanned it.  But I think it's at least even odds I'm the first person to ever actually read the book because even with what I just described it's far and away the highest grade GA comic I've ever had the pleasure of holding in my hands.  What a beautiful surprise, at that price I would have been quite happy with anything in good enough shape to get a decent scan of!

Thanks to the great generosity of Comicstew, Peter Wheat News 61 is now ready for download.  The scans on this one are much larger and clearer than those in the original eBay listing.  Some days my fellow collectors make me very happy; getting these scans even though I lost the auction is wonderful.

And here's Target Comics v9 n3.  Enjoy!  (This, along with a couple other Target's I've done recently, was from my own collection but it going to get thrown in when I send other books back to JVJ as a bit of a thank you.)

Remember a few weeks ago when I asked about bidding on Heritage?

After a very long day of scanning and editing, I have FIVE issues of Adventures of Peter Wheat ready to go tonight.  (JVJ's Jingle Jangles should start showing up tomorrow.)  26, 42, 43, 45, and 46.  Unfortunately, only the 26 is by Kelly.  The Connell/ Hubbard issues are a lot better than the handful I already posted, though, in my opinion.  And the 26 was just amazing for me, as a Kelly fan, to look at.  I want to let other people get a chance to look at it before I start talking about it but I'm going to have some things to say.  Enjoy!

Thanks Eric.
#26 was a lovely book, just lovely.

Wasn't it?  I just wish I had more of the story, this was either part 2 of 3 or part 3 of 4.  In either case, one of the longer comic stories I can recall seeing from that era- or at least, seeing part of.  :D  And just an amazing diversity of creatures, with Kelly in wonderful form on his faces.  The range of emotions on some of gnomes was incredible.  In a lot of the Peter Wheat stories around this time, we see Kelly playing with scale; with Peter and the cast meeting with either Giants or, in one case, people so small that Peter is the giant to them.  It's fascinating to see how he plays with layouts to get that effect, particularly in this issue.  Full page mid-story splashes are not very common in this era; Kelly has one and I think only changed another (page four) to two panels late in the process.  I also really like the faces in the trees and rocks on pages 4 and 5.  And the tall panels on page 8 to show the cliff.  The storytelling on page 10 is just wonderfully staged.  Little details, like the only lock on the door being low enough for the gnomes to reach.  There is just so much in this issue to notice that you don't often get in books from this era.

It's interesting, Peter Wheat seems to be Kelly's run at doing a mostly straight-forward adventure comic; Our Gang tended to jump from adventure to humor but I haven't really seen any 'funny' Peter Wheat stories yet.  Amusing, with comic relief or the occasional joke, yes.  But it's mostly a serious adventure comic with a very strong continuity.  I understand from comments by Maggie Thompson that there are notable lapses in art continuity from issue to issue, but even with only about 1/3 of the Adventure issues (including the few reprints that exist) and just 1 issue of News I can see how much of a ongoing story Kelly was doing here.  Just incredible stuff that gets better the more I see; and the issue 26 is just a standout of the run I've found so far.

Normally, I don't really comment in the upload section, but I've gotta say that this book really is a jewel, and there's a LOT to it in those few pages.  And as Eric points out, the craftsmanship all around is frankly shocking.  Definitely not just a "let's just get this done to pay the bills" job.

I'm glad people are enjoing the issue.  I know how amazed and impressed I was; and that doesn't often happen with Kelly any more.  (There is a downside to having seen around 8,000 or so pages of one artist's work; you enjoy new to you material but the sense of wonder can be muted.  Not gone, but muted.)

And scanning has been slow this week; when real life hits scanning is one of the first things to go.  But here's a small update:

Jingle Jangle Comics 17 is now complete c2c.  I was going to just get JVJ's copy, but when I found the book for 12 bucks I decided it would look nice in my collection.  I rescanned the cover since my copy wasn't missing a chunk; filled the three missing pages, and added JVJ's info card since he happened to throw it in with the ones for the Jingle Jangles he actually sent me.

So, Jingle Jangle 17:  Original scanner unknown, fills by OtherEric, artist info from JVJ.  Enjoy!

And here's my first book from my own collection in a while:

Peter Wheat Four in One Fun Pac #4, from 1954 now up on the FTP.  This item is, as far as I know, previously undocumented:  3 pages of #1 are floating around online; Overstreet mentions #2 but not #1.  The comic strip part is by Walt Kelly; it's an edited reprint of Adventures of Peter Wheat #9.  Even incomplete, it looks a hell of a lot better than the reprint of the story Eclipse did in my opinion.  Other art is either clearly by Hubbard or, in the case of the bird illustrations, totally unknown to me.

I know a large percentage of the people here don't care about Peter Wheat and are probably bored with my continual harping on it; but the people who do like it should appreciate this one.  Enjoy!

Oh, and off on a total tangent:  The book was described as being NM 9.2 and I can't argue with it; as far as I'm concerned I got it dirt cheap.  I've become convinced "guide value" on any Peter Wheat items is even more meaningless than usual; they're way too rare.   Other than the worry of damaging the book it's amazing how EASY to scan and edit a high-grade item is; it's a nice change of pace.  ;D  (And thanks to the format I think I scanned it without hurting the book at all.  Not that it matters; I've got no plans to let it go.)

Thanks OtherEric.  I'm always up for more Kelly.

BTW is the other (original I guess) Eric around anymore.  You could change -- though I'm guessing you're used to OtherEric by now.

I'm moved, full scanning should resume soon.  I've got one small one for people today, though:

Adventures of Peter Wheat 44 uploaded to the FTP.

This is one of the Del Connell/ Al Hubbard issues, not Kelly, unfortunately.  It does give is a run of six issues in a row, though, which is kind of neat.  Enjoy!

And here's another book for people that should prove popular:

Phantom Lady (Ajax) #5 (1) now on the FTP.

Overstreet says this issue has Baker art; I would love to hear from the experts around here.

I'll ask you, Eric,
If there is Baker here, which story would you consider good enough to be his?

Not the Phantom Lady stories, that's for sure.  I see a possible hint in some of the faces in the "Intruders" story, but only when I look really hard.  And it's possible the "host" heads of PL in that story is a stat from Baker.
