Comic info research help
« on: July 20, 2013, 02:59:19 PM »

Does anyone have info on the contents for AC Comics' GOLDEN-AGE GREATS SPOTLIGHT Vol. 8 [Outrageous Good Girl Art Comics], from 2012? In particular, from their solicitation, it seems there are two Rulah reprints in this volume. The GCD hasn't gotten around to cataloguing the contents of ths book yet.

I'm putting together a checklist of all Rulah appearances (original stories and reprints)--and just when I think I've found all I can find, another one turns up. So it would be good to know anything about those two Rulah reprints, even a little information might help me deduce which ones they are.

On a related note, somewhat. Does anyone know the re-publication date for CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED 90 (Green Mansions) [HRN 165]

There are indeed two Rulah stories reprinted in GOLDEN-AGE GREATS SPOTLIGHT Vol. 8 [Outrageous Good Girl Art Comics].  Neither has the original source credited though.
The first is a ten-page story which is untitled.  The splash page caption starts-"Malice and hatred flame in the shriveled heart of Hagga.."
The second is a twelve-page story entitled "The Frenzy of the Dishonored Idol".

Hope this is of some help.

Classics Illustrated #90 had British issues.  There were 2 appearances.  There was also an issue in Poland.
Don't know if that's any help.

Oh great! Thanks a whole bunch!!! The first one is from ZOOT COMICS 14a (March '48): Condemned. CB+ doesn't have this issue, but the GCD identifies Hagga in its entry. And they confirm Matt Baker as the artist. I may have to buy that volume just for that story (unless CB+ gets the missing issue). The second one--Frenzy of the Dishnored Idol--is from ZOOT COMICS 10 (November '47)--which is by Matt Baker with a question mark (according to GCD).

That's good information to know, although it raises another question for me. I was going to just account for the six American printings of CI 90, but should I try to account for all the other printings out there? It could be a daunting task.

The Rulah stories in GOLDEN-AGE GREATS SPOTLIGHT Vol. 8 [Outrageous Good Girl Art Comics] have no art credit although every other story in the collection does credit the artists.

Bill Black does have this to say about the art in Rulah in his text essay- "Drawn by an unknown artist who tried to emulate Baker in the beautiful woman department, Rulah was more popular than even Phantom Lady."

So apparently Mr. Black disagrees with the GCD's assessment.

Sorry to muddy the waters on that but I thought you might want to hear what Mr. Black had to say on the matter.

Best

Yes, I came across such a comment from Bill Black in my internet research. I'm not sure what to do with that. I still have to get the Jim Amash book on Matt Baker and see what they say there.

Of course, if Black is right the I will have to completely scrap the blog I have on Rulah and rebuid it from the ground up. So I'm trusting that the GCD knows of what it speaks.

Anyway, can't hang about, because my internet connection today is not dependable.

Classics Illustrated - There were 163 issues ( not including C.I. Juniors)  and there were a number of reprints of each.  C.I. was also published for Ireland; Denmark; Sweden; Poland; France; Netherlands.  I've looked, unsuccessfully, for an online guide so the only thing I have is my copy of the UK Comic Price guide. There are also currently re-issues, re-packaged, of European issues which were not published in UK but are now available translated into English.  Just to further muddy the waters, you understand.  My pal, Wee John has been collecting these, so, I might be able to get a list from him of what is available.  Let me know.

I got the dates for some of the other printings from my most recent copy of the Overstreet Price Guide, but for the 4th printing 3rd printing they don't give a date. I only want to know for GREEN MANSIONS--I'm not going to take on doing research for all the CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED line. But it would be nice to know about the other printings for GREEN MANSIONS.

edit: It's the CI 90 3rd printing [HRN 165] that I'm trying to get the date for. I don't know why I was saying 4th printing. I've edited the correct number into my post now.

About half a year ago, I read the bulk of the Rulah stories, which is why I decided to do a blog about them now. But last time I probably should have kept note of everything I was reading and where I was finding it.

This time I just assumed I had found everything on CB+, but as I've looked through the stories here, I've realized there were some Rulahs I read in other places. So now I have to track down those different sources.

One is the comic book catacombs which has the story from the first (and only) issue of Fox's TEGRA.

CB+ has the other issues with the name change (and hair change) to ZEGRA.

I wasn't able to pull jpegs from those catacomb pages. But by using Bing Images I was able to find another copy of the inside front cover in jpeg format that I've put on my checklist: 3 Faces of the Goddess.

There's also JUNGLE THRILLS 16 from Star, which isn't on CB+, but I found those pages of the Rulah story (reprinted from ALL TOP COMICS 15) on
http://www.art4comics.com/rulahstr.htm

--however, the story on that site is missing two pages.

The CB+ scans for Star's TERRORS OF THE JUNGLE 4 include the cover for I.W.'s JUNGLE ADVENTURES 10--yet JUNGLE ADVENTURES 10 is not in the I.W. Publishing section on CB+. Both titles reprinted the C story from ZOOT COMICS 3b--so I'm not sure if the scans on CB+ for TOJ 4 are actually the version that appeared in that comic or the version that appeared in JA 10--or if both were identical.

I'm sure there were a few other odds and ends that I turned up when I was on my Rulah hunt before, which I may discover again.

Looking at the listings on the Grand Comics Database for CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED, I wonder if very many foreign publishers got around to GREEN MANSIONS.

Relative to other adaptations in CLASSIC COMICS and CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED, from Gilberton, CI 90 had few printings. Some of the others had quite a lot of printings. Which indicates how popular a specific story might have been.

On the GCD, the only foreign publisher I can find that printed CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED 90 was Thorpe and Porter. And the GCD only shows them doing one printing, with the original Blum painted cover. But that's all the information on the Database right now. No indication of the actual publication date for that printing.

I might include the Thorpe and Porter version on my list, but it would be nice to get the date for it.

On Bob Hughes' Who's Whose site, he has a listing of CLASSICS ILLUSTRATED, including British and Canadian editions. So I found the date for the Thorpe and Porter CI 90--May '56--and I'm adding it to my list. But looking at Bob's site I couldn't find anything on that elusive 3rd printing. If other sources didn't have it listed, I'd think it didn't exist.

I'm making an educated guess and saying the date is January '62 (with a question mark). On Bob's site there are other issues listed as HRN 165 and they all are dated January '62. So I think it's a good gamble that this is the approximate publication date.

Okay here's a new research problem for anyone here to solve. A few days ago I put up my extra blog page Can You Draw, Too?.

On there you can see four pages I pulled from scans that I have for NEW COMICS issues 1 - 4, from '35 and '36--published by the variously named National Allied or National Comic Magazines etc owned by Major Malcolm Wheeler Nicholson--and the precursor of National Periodical Publications which became DC.

These are pages from the feature called Cartoon Corner--a cartooning how-to feature. They look remarkably similar to the pages I have for a book from Dover which reprints DRAW COMICS! HERE

This seems a good place to ask.  Anyone know who the artist was who did THIS?

I'm currently working on my latest blog which will be an overview of Canadian comics history. Of course, I am depending on the oddball assortment of comics that I have for some of the content. So, I have a Canadian issue of BATMAN 56 (January - February '50), published by Simcoe, in Toronto. This is a very good version of DC's BATMAN 56 (December '49 - January '50) and there's not a lot that distinguishes it from the American comic as far as I know. I don't have the American edition, so I can't compare. But all the content seems to be DC except the text feature which appears on the inside front and inside back cover. It's titled Whoosh--and You're There!--about flying down to Argentina.

The GCD doesn't say anything about a text page in the DC comic, so I don't know if this text is a particular feature of the Canadian edition or not. I was wondering if anyone out there can confirm whether or not this text is in the DC version of BATMAN 56.

I solved that mystery. The GCD does include that text page in their entry--I just missed it somehow. The text was moved from the middle of the comic to the inside front and back cover on the Canadian edition.

I was scanning Captain Action ads from '60s  comics for my--ahem--secret blog project for next month, when I realized that Kurt Schaffenberger must have pencilled those ads.

I'm sure others can confirm or deny this--and it's probably old hat to some. But it was quite a surprise for me, that it never clicked in my brain before, despite the hours I spent as a kid looking at those ads--and Schaffenberger's art.

I can't guess who inked the ads. Doesn't look like Kurt inked them himself, since his line work is so distinctive.

Hi Jimm,
I just added a Canadian reprint of Tegra 01 to DCM.
http://digitalcomicmuseum.com/index.php?dlid=22954

I'm sure it will show up on CB+ in short order.

Funny, I had this for ages but never noticed it was missing on the site.

Sorry about that. I responded earlier without checking and I couldn't remember what the deal was with TEGRA/ZEGRA--but yeah TEGRA is already in the one-shots. although it's really the first issue of the series that would become ZEGRA.

There should be a note about that for anyone who is searching for it.

A new project I've set for myself is to read all--well, some--of the comics that tell stories of Leif Eikson coming to Vinland from Greenland and other Vinland sagas. [But not VINLAND SAGA which is a manga that has nothing to do with Greenland or Canada.]

I've a short list of stories to read:

ASTERIX AND THE GREAT CROSSING (to be purchased)
PRINCE VALIANT Vols. 5? & 6 [Fantagraphic Books] (to be puchased)

KID ETERNITY Nos. 2 & 4 (on CB+)
JUMBO COMICS No. 36 (on CB+)

TREASURE CHEST OF FUN FACTS Vol.10, No. 18 (on order)
PICTURE STORIES FROM AMERICAN HISTORY No. 1 (on order)
THE WORLD AROUND US No. 29 (on order)
REAL LIFE COMICS No. 52 reprinted in THE COMPLETE FRAZETTA WHITE INDIAN (on order)

BATMAN No. 52 reprinted in BATMAN No. 193 (in my collection)
WORLD'S FINEST COMICS No. 135 (in my collection)
CAPTAIN CANUCK No. 13 (in my collection)

I'm not sure about PRINCE VALIANT. Do I have to get volume 5 from Fantagraphics? Apparently, Valiant courted and married Aleta in the 1946 continuities. In the 1947 stories, the couple come to Canada--um Vinland--and Aleta gives birth to Prince Arn. This story introduces Tilicum. At least that's my rough understanding--not being a Prince Valiant expert, I don't know for sure if I have to get volume 5 which apparently covers the wedding, but I assume I ought to get volume 6.

I'm sure there are some Prince Valiant experts on here, so maybe one of you can steer me in the right direction.

THE WORLD AROUND US No.29 is published by Gilberton and features a good selection of artists, so I'm looking forward to getting it in the mail.

TREASURE CHEST OF FUN FACTS was published by George A. Pflaum. I've never heard of this publisher and I see that none of their comics are on CB+ so I gather they aren't in the public domain.
