What do you do at Parent Teacher conference day when no parents show up?
« Reply #200 on: October 10, 2008, 06:42:14 PM »

Why you scan of course.  And you all benefit. As I sat scanning I thought of the otehrs of you out there who are/have done the same. Then I think about the fact that my scans may be the only thing some see of the comic a hundred years from now. Pretty cool. And who knows what might be popular then? They may think superheroes are stupid and Funny Animal books are da bomb.

Mickey Finn 03 Eastern Color from coverless
Bobby Benson 16 c2c
Dark Mysteries 23 IW reprint no ads
Tales of Horror 02 IW reprint no ads
Justice Traps the Guilty 90 from coverless

I sure spent a lot of time at the scanner for only 5 books. Oh well time to go home.

Geo where did you find the info for the crimininals on the run reprint? Nothing on the GCD except unk. Does anyone have any more of Criminals or YKC to scan?

It came out of the Overstreet Price Guide, 2005 edition. What is strange is when I looked up the original series it didn't show a version 4 series, only a version 3 series as the last one, so the data maybe false or it was originally from one of the other series. I have some more info on the original series if you want. I'll put it up if you want, just ask.

This is all they have listed:

Young King Cole (becomes "Criminals on the Run")
Fall 1945 (V1, #1) though V3, #6 July 1948
Premium Group/Novelty Press
V1, #1 Toni Gayle begins
2-6
V2, #1-6
V3, #1-6
Note: Toni Gayle covers - V2,#1, 3, 5, V3, #1, 6.

Nothing on who wrote the stories or did the art, sorry, so this probably won't help much/any.

Hey I only raid the best. Well actually I just grab anything I find we do not have here. I was not even aware that it contained Kelly as I have not looked at it yet. Guess I will take a peek.

Here is my guess on what is done by Kelly in Tiny Tots #1 (1943):

Cover and back cover for sure,
3 Little Pigs - maybe but I'm leaning toward not,
3 Blind Mice for sure,
The Billy Goats - maybe again
The End for sure.

Overstreet says there are two Kelly stories; if that's correct (and I'm not sure that it is) I would go with the pigs and the mice.  I think it's more than possible he had help on the 3 little Pigs, though.  The wolf is the only bit that screams Kelly at me for sure in that story.

You're welcome, keep in mind that's still just my guess.

(After making my original assessment, I started to wonder what exactly qualified me to pick out the Kelly art.  A quick & dirty calculation showed I have somewhere around 8000 pages of Kelly in my collection.  Which may not make me an expert, but I don't think anybody would argue that it at least gives me some frame of reference.  ;D )

Speaking of Kelly collections.  I remember many years ago dropping my son off at summer camp in Maine.  One year my wife and I stopped at all the lighthouses on the shore on the way back. Another year we stopped at all the used book stores in the little towns.  One guy had about 20 Simon & Schuster Pogo paperbacks.  Including all the ones I needed.  I grabbed them all for real cheap and didn't realize until I got them home they were all first printings.  The sad thing is they looked unread.  :-(.

I can assure you, they no longer do.

My collection is very much a mix of printings and conditions; I'm just happy that it is (other than the 70's omnibuses) complete.

I'm really looking forward to the Fantagraphic collections; I hope they find the rest of the Sundays they need soon.  (Those are going to be the highlight of the books for us hardcore collectors; the first several years of dailies have been reprinted several times.)

Raiding is a lot easier than scanning. ;) I wondered about Orphan Annie but it was 1927 so I figured it might be good.

1922 or earlier is the cutoff date for "nothing published from here back in the US is still copyrighted".  So 1927 will need to be specifically checked.

And the Crime Smashers book.  Trojan crossed the line of good taste quite often.
