did you ever read my plea for instructions on how to work offline for the GCD? You mentioned some utility or program that I could download and install and then upload a tab- (or was it comma-?) delimited file to be incorporated into the GCD. Well, I'd like to learn more about it, any I guess you've been targeted as the one who can help me.

I sent a copy of the ud tool to your regular email Jim. I am not techie enough to know exactly how a tab delimited text works. All I know is if you open the text file in a spreadsheet the proper cells get filled in. It will work with any spreadsheet that can handle tab delimited files and then save them back as tab delimited. If it did not come in let me know and I will try again.

So everything is reprinted from MS 13 but 16 pages are missing in the reprint? narf




It IS and it ISN'T issue #13 from Feb. of 1947, narf. There are 14 pages excerpted between the end of the Harry the Horse story and the beginning of the Tuffy Bear story, and a two-pager excerpted after the Pete the Peke story. So the guts were RE-printed by IW and were not old books with new covers.

I am not techie enough to know exactly how a tab delimited text works.

It just means that you hit the tab key between important pieces of information.  That is, the tabs shows the reader the "limits" of each field.  As you point out, most spreadsheets automatically do this behind the scenes for you.

I figured that would probably indicate next field but what about next line? To understand where the info would go it looks like you would have to recognize where a tab was used. Some text readers will show that.

Oh.  Oops.  The next line just goes on the next line.

Think in terms of a web form.  Tab gets you to the next fill-in field.  Enter almost always activates the Submit or OK button.  Both of these (plus spreadsheets) are based on old "green screen" terminal programs...because most of us are still using the same databases that were in use in the '60s or competing products that want to be compatible, which is the reason I bring it up.  It's less technical than historical and arbitrary.

I seem to remember something about that, narf. Sorry, my brain is like a steel sieve these days. I'll look into it and get back to you. I'm in the process of upgrading my server for our home network and it just HAPPENED to arrive and I set it up coincidentally with my isp doing an upgrade on their software that blew out my internet access. Not knowing this, I've spent three days trying to figure out what I did wrong. Nothing, of course, and things are back to "normal" now, but I lost a little sleep over it, I assure you.

All that is just to explain why something I got a couple of days ago may have slipped my mind. Thanks for your efforts.

And tonight we have the long awaited Top Spot with the wonderful Duke of Darkness. In a few minutes it will be joined by Key Comics #4 to complete the series. It contains one of my other odd little favorites Will O The Wisp. Issue 4 and 5 have just great Wisp stories by Altman.

Interesting, the Top Spot also has a text story by Bruce Elliot.  Who is best known as Walter Gibson's replacement as "Maxwell Grant", the Shadow author.  I've always felt he got a bum rap, his run on the Shadow was a lot better than their reputation would suggest.  They may not be good Shadow stories due to editorial wishes, but they're often quite good pulp fiction.

You want to hear an AMAZING coincidence, narf? I hadn't given Elliot a thought for months. Do you remember the "Bubble Artist" from Fairy Tale Parade? Well I was talking to Hames Ware less than an hour ago about the issue of FTP #6 I downloaded and telling him that the Bubble Artist was in it, too. He reminded me that we'd seen that artist somewhere else and together we pieced together a trail that led to Narrative (connection to Holyoke and, perhaps, Rural Home) and their Power Comics. Sure enough, in Power #3 there is a Dr. Mephisto story that sort of resembles that artist, and in issue #4, THERE is the SAME "Bubble" colophon as in FTP on that issue's Dr. Mephisto.

Now that's pretty coincidental that things would loop around like that, but here's the kicker: on a tombstone in the story in #3 is a name, barely legible, where the last five letters spell out "toile" which "almost" spells Elliot backwards. AND the Bubble Artist's signature MIGHT be a stylized "E". Now it's most likely NOT Bruce Elliot as writer OR artist, but the coincidence of the timing is a little bit eerie, wouldn't you say?

BTW: Key Comics 4 is available for all. This was one of the best condition books. Cover was firmly attatched with supple pages. I did not have to struggle to keep it together and it scanned up real nice. I do not think it needs any edits but I'll let others decide if they want me to put up the tiffs for edit or leave it as is. Looks real good to me.

I got some scanning done and have some more to do tonight. I began writing this in my head while scanning and sat down and wrote it a few minutes ago. The poem was longer than I thought but I got my version done.

Twas the night before Christmas and all through the room
not a sound could be heard but the scanner going zoom.

The comics were stacked by the computer with care
as I sat so long on a hard metal chair.

My wife was cuddled all snug in our bed 
as I scanned the comics that will one day be read.

Before I could lay down for the long nights nap
I must finish the stack of comics arest on my lap.

While some comics may be all a tatter
It really for enjoyment was of no matter

Comics that would have cost much cash
Copied off for all to enjoy in a dash

For the value of each we do know
Is in the story and art that they show

Upon the monitor the images appear
Visions of characters we hold so dear

Scan away scan away scan away quick
The comics chosen that I did pick

Artists and characters of varying fame
We know many we know them by name

Yellowjacket, Green Turtle and Iron Fist
as well as so many others make my list

To the top of the pile along the wall
I will scan them scan them scan them all

As dry brittle pages before my eyes fly
The stack is now no longer so high

Away to the ftp folder they flew
Everything old and nothing new

From here to there the files go poof
While the dog in the back yard gives a woof

As throughout the room I did look around
The pile was no longer there upon the ground

No longer there under my feet
As I sit upon my hard metal seat

A bundle of comics now I did lack
I came to the bottom of my stack

Others may soon have a day very merry
Downloading all that their hard drives may carry

Huddled up inside while outside is snow
Upon each face may be a happy bright glow

A smile grinning with a show of teeth
For the joy they feel in heart beneath

The files they will not be musty and smelly
as the books that had once sat on my belly

Now I can be as happy as an elf
I might get to read some books myself

A wink of the tired eyes in my head
Soon I will be going off to my bed

Having finished all my scanning work
Upon the boards too tired even to lurk

This is all and as far as it goes
Upon my feet I finally rose

Off I go not quite like a mistle
Off to bed not even a whistle

As I walk away and turn out the light
I exclaim to all happy holidays good night.

The file name is #2 but the comic is #3 check the cover and indicia. I accidently had #2 on the file after doing red cirlce #2. I will delete and redo it
