Animal #2 uploaded.  Editing by AgentUup.  Just two more Animals to go and Agent has #29 from me and I think #4 from HP already.

Lawbreakers #2 from Charlton and more recently from JVJ, Jon, and Mouse5150.  Now up on FTP.

I also added the missing ibc to freddyfly's National #34 and while I was at it renamed the fc ifc fiels so they'd sort in order.  Please continue to list this as a freddyfly upload.

It's worth noting that there is no major Kelly material in Animal 4.  (I say 'major' because there is apparently an ad for Fairy Tale Parade).  So, while I'm definitely looking forward to having the whole run available; we do have (AFAIK) all the important Kelly (and Stanley) material available now.  To which I can only say "Yay!"

I'm so thankful to have this run of ANIMAL COMICS. Such a cool series! Thanks to you and all other scanners/posters who have made this amazing goal happen! This is a real gift to comics fans and historians the whole world over!

Compliments to Agentup for the edits on Animal29. That is some pretty sweet work there.

Since we already had a Master #81 in fiche, I used that to find the ads and added them from Whiz and Captain Marvel for the same month to freddyfly's paper scans.  The text pages are still from fiche.  I also put in a regular-sized front cover from Heritage.

Uploaded to FTP -- keep credit with freddyfly.

I assume the other two can be removed.

Ok, a quick question that really needs answers from 3 or 4 people:  I believe we can't use the whole issue, but is the Albert story in Our Gang 6 PD?  And, assuming the scanner doesn't mind (Henry Peters, IIRC) does anybody think sticking just that story onto the end of the Animal 4 as a bonus story is a good idea?  That's where the story fits in the continuity, anyway, and it would otherwise be a gap in the early Pogo stories on the site.

I've collected all the Pogo appearances from Animal and have done what you suggested Eric.
It's a big file - over 124mb!  My Dad has been reading them on his laptop and enjoying them as much as I had hoped he would.  :)

I don't think there should be a problem with sharing only the Pogo story from Our Gang but JCOLAG or Aussie would be the ones to confirm it.

The Our Gang #6 scan is mine back when I scanned all the Dell Pogo issues.  I guess I'd call it Animal #4a rather than attach it, but certainly go ahead and use it.  I can upload if needed.

That works well, Jon.  Once we get a heads up from JCOLAG or Aussie, I'll upload an "Animal Comics 004a" with just that story and and an explination of what it is and where we got it.  This is just one of the very rare cases where I think it's worthwhile to print a single usable story out of an uncleared issue.  (I'm assuming the Our Gang's are not PD due to the Tom & Jerry stories unless we hear otherwise.)

Our Gang was renewed (regardless of its contents), but haphazardly, it looks like.  Issue #2 is still covered, as is everything past #9, but #4 looks free, with the usual caveats that the stories might be from earlier, still-copyrighted sources and so forth.  My impression is that the title isn't allowed simply because of that partial renewal, but I usually keep out of policy matters like that.

Now, if we can only uncapitalize my user name.  It can't be comfortable to type that way...

Heh.  I'm mostly joking, obviously.  As they say, "as long as it's not late to dinner."

Barring weirdness where "simple machines" decides I've already read something before I've seen it, I usually at least skim every thread, so it probably doesn't make a difference how obviously I'm addressed.

Plus, keep in mind that I don't do anything impressive to find the copyright renewals.  The really complicated algorithm involves adding twenty-eight to the year of publication and then deciding if that resulting number is bigger or smaller than 1978.  I wouldn't want anybody implying that if I don't get to something, they're not allowed to check.

(That's also why I hedge on possible reprinted or derived stories--that's only something that a genuine expert can verify, and requires the sorts of searches I don't know how to do except in very simple cases.)

Well I figure telling people to PM you will make sure you get any questions for sure.  And I certainly trust you to find out the status of books better than me!

You might add that info about 28yrs and 1978 to your post in the reference links thread and other posts where those copyright links were posted.  Just a thought.

Re Master81 - c2c-

Jon, thank-you for the lovely job of turning it into a c2c book!  I've removed the fiche version but I feel it best to leave Freddyfly's paper version as is and let those that only want the non-ads version a choice since Freddy was kind enough to upload it that way.

Thanks Freedy and Jon!  One more fiche scan bites the dust!  :)

I assume from your comments that Our Gang 6 looks OK, as well as the 4.  (We're calling it Animal 4a, but it's actually Our Gang 6 that had the story.)  I'll put that together later today.

I'm guessing yes.  But please be sure it's clear by the file name that this is ONLY the Pogo story and nothing more.

Thanks,

I'm currently assigning the file the slightly unwieldly title of Animal_Comics_004a_Jon(Pogo_from_Our_Gang_6).cbz (phew!)

I've created a "cover" page, as well, with the following text and a thumbnail of the OG6 cover:

Quote

Animal Comics 4(a)

This story from Our Gang 6 originally appeared between Animal Comics 3 and 4.

While Pogo does not appear, this early appearance of Albert and Bumbazine is still an important early story in the development of the series.  While we can't reprint the whole issue on GAC, please enjoy this stage in Walt Kelly's development of his most famous series.

(Each paragraph is in a decreasing font size.)

If Jon and Yoc will sign off on that I'll go ahead and post the file in the Animal Comics Section under the issue title "Animal Comics 004a (Our Gang 6 Pogo Only)"

All of which is a lot of effort for one story, but it really is worth doing if we have the whole Animal Comics run as well.

If it appears between Animal #3 and #4 I'd call it #3a for proper sorting.  The other alternative is to call it 4a and the regular #4 issue #4b, but that seems awkward.  Other than that, it looks good.
