My current/ new projects
« on: August 24, 2008, 09:00:58 AM »

I just want to sound people out a bit here.

I'm getting near the end of what I have to scan in my boxes of random PD GA books.  But, since I like the idea of scanning books I've already started working on getting new items to scan.  In general, I don't have any real interest in scanning non-PD books.

So, I've been buying some comics recently with the idea of scanning them specifically in mind.

My first project was the Mayer issues of The Funnies; even before I started scanning whole books.  But I wanted to share at least the Mayer material from the start.  Luckily, Toro7Tetoro had already started the project and JonTheScanner finished where I left off; unless I spot a copy of the cover of 22 any issues I buy are purely for myself now.

My second targeted effort was Animal Comics; Jon is in the wings to pick that up once I stumble but I'm still working on getting the issues for myself.  (I can't believe the early appearances of a fairly major character are as cheap as those are; I expect a correction within the next few years.)  So that's fun, and I've got more on the way, but other than a copy of 1 it's something that will finish up with our without me.  Still, it's another run where I'm going to be one of the major scanners of the title and it's another one where I take pride in making it available; if it's PD it _should_ be out there for people to get.

More importantly, I'm starting to work on getting myself a third (and possibly fourth and fifth and...) project.  Unlike the first two, I'm a lot more interested in making sure it's something others want to see; not just something I'm doing for myself.  My current project is, at least tentatively, Authentic Police Cases.  It seems to have a lot of good points:  It's relatively uncommon and obscure; not much has been scanned yet; it's expensive enough that it's not an easy to get book but cheap enough that I can actually afford most if not all the issues over time.  Most importantly, about 3/4 of the issues have rarely seen Matt Baker art.  And for the most part, even the non-Baker material is better than average for pre-code books; St. John may not have been anywhere near EC's level but it was a hell of a lot better and more consistent than a lot of publishers of that era.

So, here are my questions  (Finally, those of you who are still reading say!):

1) Do people want to see my try and make a project out of Authentic Police Cases?  (I'm not really interested in "No" in an answer unless you have some specific argument or reason; but I want to make sure there's an interest before I go much further than the few I've already got on the way.  I don't want to bother if at least a few people won't say they _do_ view it as an appealing project.)

2) Are there any other titles people might suggest as projects for me to look for?  My basic requirements are about what I listed for APC; not too common or cheap, not too rare or expensive, some "hook" (such as lots of a certain artist) to make it appealing as a whole, PD, and mostly not yet scanned.  I'm sure there are lots of titles like that still out there; even if I get support on APC there will be an early flurry of books I can find and afford and then it will slow way down.  I hit APC as a project mostly by accident due to a couple of stray comments on the boards and spotting a few affordable issues; I think it's a good project but it's not one I ever would have though of to look for completely on my own.

An 'Authentic Police Case's' run would be cool but you need'nt bother with issue_002 as I bought and scanned this sometime back, in fact I thought it was already on the site but can't seem to locate it.

Maybe Lofty or Yoc can take care of it, and if they don't have the scans themselves they know how to get hold of me.

Issue Two is far from being the best of the run, pre-Baker and 50% reprint ( mostly Chesler shop stuff I seem to recall) but still an interesting package AND a "Classic" girl in peril cover.

Hi Eric,
Well, this is nice news to read when GAC finally got back online tonight.  (No clue why it was down.)

I'm a Very Big fan of Baker myself so I love your idea.  If you wanted to expand it on the Baker theme you could continue with his likely cheaper St. John romance books as well.

Other project suggestions?  Sure, I can think of a few!

A project very close to my heart right now would be the missing Phantom Lady stories still needed to complete the Phantom Lady Archives v2.  If you check the last page of v1 you'll see a list of the missing Fox books.  Phabox and I could really use some help with this!

Other Baker I'd love to see is a complete run of all his Sky Girl stories found in FH's Jumbo Comics.  I was just talking about that with Phabox not that long ago.  We've got a good chunk of the books needed - she ran from Jumbo 68 to 130.

A fun project would be Dick Briefer's Frankenstein book.  There have been some scanned and a reprint book but it's such a fun character I'm sure there are many that would love to see more.  I know I would!  But I've no idea how much they go for on the market.

Other projects currently on the go here include a complete run of all Charltan's Yellowjacket appearances and a complete Croydons Blazing Comics run.  Both are close to being done.

I'm also a big fan of Fletcher Hanks, recently the focus of 'I Shall Destroy A Civilized Planets.'  His stay in comics a short 5 years but he's not easy to collect as I don't know of any definitive listing of all his work.  You find his stuff popping up in different books like Witty Comics here on GAC.  He's sure not a fan favourite though I find his unique style and demented stories a lot of fun in an oddball way.

If you wanted to continue with collecting old comic strip reprints you might try United's 'Sparkler Comics.'  But they have Tarzan reprints so they wouldn't be good for the site and likely cost a pretty penny as well.  Oh well...

Story Comics crime and horror books are considered among the most gory.  Fight Against Crime and Mysterious Adventures have had a few books scanned from each of them.

Another idea could be Canadian Whites.  From what I've heard their poor paper quality and lack of big name artists makes them not as expensive to collect.  I've found Superior's crime and horror books to be fun when I've gotten them.  Journey Into Fear and Strange Mysteries are a couple of titles that have had several books already scanned but aren't complete yet.  Darwination has done a few Journey books you can find on the site.  Again, these aren't everyone's cup of tea either.

Finally there are many missing Quality books or fiche only versions that could always use help.

Well, I've rambled on long enough.  The missing Fox Phantom Lady books and Briefer's Frankenstein Comics are the two that excite me the most for what it's worth.

Good luck on whatever route you choose!

I'm keeping my eyes open for Phantom Lady, but at least at the moment it tends to be WAY out of my price range, at least as a specific project.  But there's always a chance I'll get lucky at some point.  I'm also always keeping an eye out for the Baker romance books, at least at reasonable prices.

The most likely project of the ones you suggest, once the well starts running on dry on Animal and Authentic Police Cases, is Frankenstein. There seem to be at least a few issues out there in my price range, and the Briefer stuff is fun.  It's just amazing how the series ran from horror to humor and back again.

I've got several books either in my possession or on the way; I'll be scanning another Authentic Police Cases in the next day or so.  The bad new is it's a non-Baker issue; the good news is it's one of the 100 Page issues.

Thanks for the feedback, I wanted to double check before I started spending too much effort on the project.

Eric --

Authentic Police Cases sounds great.  I'll ask around and see who may have what unscanned issues.

All issues of Animal except #1 have been located and will be scanned.  Right now I'm finishing off scanning of Supersnipe (not allowed here but lots of fun), so I've been slow on the Dells.  Once I finish, I will scan the rest of Fairy Tale Parade and Animal.

Several of us are also looking to complete Our Gang.  We've located all issues of that except 7 & 8.

Dick Briefer's Frankenstein is also a great idea that's been chatted about.  I'm not sure what's up on the site here, but this is what I know:
1 44 pages scanned
2 44 pages scanned
3 9 pages scanned (I think -- I don't have)
4 paper owned by a scanner
5 one story scanned (I think -- ditto)
6
7 42 pages scanned
8  I own a copy
9-10
11 Karloff story scanned (I think -- ditto)
12 scanned ctc
13-17
18 22 pages scanned
19-20
21-2 scanned ctc
23-26
27 one story scanned
28
29 scanned ctc
30-1
32 20 pages scanned
33 scanned ctc

As far as I can determine Authentic Police Cases #2 4 7 8 11 12 19 24 29 30 31 33 35 have been scanned.  I will upload those not already here.  I have notes that say 34 has been scanned, but I'm not sure about that

No worries Jon.  I've uploaded and added all the missing APC issues I have.  But I don't have #19 or #34 if they are out there so please add them if you find them.

Those incomplete Frankenstein issues you mentioned you were missing in your list are here on the site btw.

Well, I've got Animal 12, 13, 17, and 23 on the way.  Those are books I want for my own collection in any case, so no rush on you scanning them until I stop finding copies.  (Besides, I want the Fairy Tale Parade scans!)

Authentic Police Cases:  I've got 17, 23, 26, and 34 either on the way or in the works; let me know on the 34 if it needs to be scanned or not.

Before I start looking for Frankenstein, a list of what issues of Prize comics (other than what we have here, if any) would be helpful as well.

Thanks for all the feedback, I've got stuff to keep me busy for a while now.

Oh, one other book I might have a line on a few issues:  Does anybody know if there are any issues of Target Comics v 1-3 that have been scanned but aren't up on the site?

I am not sure if you are just talking about volume 1 issues 1-3 or if you mean volumes 1-3.

Target Comics v1 #1 & #2 are on the download site. My own records indicate that there is not yet a scan available for v1 #3. There are bits and pieces from Volumes 1-9 available on the download site and from other occasional sites.

I mean volumes 1-3.  The only Targets I care enough about to actively look for would be the ones with Spacehawk.  I may know where I can afford a few of those; I wanted to make sure there weren't already scans of the books done that we just haven't gotten around to posting here before I went and spent the money.

Okay, well then here is what I have recorded as available scans of those three volumes.

V1 -- Full contents of #1, #2, #8, and partial contents of #10 and #11
V2 -- Full contents of #9, and partial contents of #4
V3 -- Full contents of #3, #4, #7, and partial contents of #1, #2,&  #12

That's _exactly_ the sort of info I was looking for, boox.  Thank you.

Any chance you or somebody could upload the v1 i8?  I don't think we have it here.

I am looking for v1 #8...sadly, so far it appears to be on a disc that I did not label...which highly annoys me...because I obviously have more than one disc...and I cannot for the life of me remember where I obtained the scan.

Hopefully someone has it at reach.  :-\

Hi Eric,
There are a lot of partial issues of Target out there.  Mostly from Bill Nolan and our own Steve Rogers who's added a few complete issues to the site.  He might add more down the road if we are lucky.

I've been working on sorting out what I have and I'll be doing a big upload of them soon.

What I don't have is Target v1 #8.  So B, if you do have it please try and find it.

Stay tuned,

Well, I'll try and skip issues we have even partial scans of for the moment.  It will be a week or three before I wind up trying to grab any issues; and even if they're already scanned I would still like them for my collection.  For now I'm trying to focus my spending on unscanned books, though.

Yoc,

I was a touch 'type A' last night and kept looking...and finished looking this morning...and I still cannot locate a Target v1 #8,  so I am wondering if in the various floods of materials that appeared, that perhaps I made an entry error and mislabeled BLUE BOLT v1 #8.  >:(

Someone deduct my karma, I hate those kind of mistakes.  :'(
