how to open downloaded file?
« on: October 09, 2008, 06:44:00 PM »

Hello all - I just joined and downloaded a comic to my desktop.  I looked around the forum for an answer but could not find one.  How do I open it up?

You can indeed save whatever you like, here.  If your browser doesn't offer when you click the link, try to right-click the link and select whatever option sounds like "save whatever's at the other end of this link."  All the browsers use different terminology, but it'll sound like some dorkified version of that.

I usually keep a copy of everything in case I want to reread it, then grumble when my drive fills up (what you might call a "high quality problem") and spend a few hours archiving to DVD.  I figure that's better than finding out I'm having connectivity problems.

I grabbed two when they were on sale, but I also develop software, and then there's the Internet Archive's collection of movies and book scans.  I mean, I NEED my high-resolution copies of "Your Name Here" and Tom Lehrer's performance...

Speaking of which, just as a heads up, the myBooks (or whatever they're called) seem to have a limited shelf life.  But it's the controller, rather than the drive.  If yours dies (as one of mine did), you can crack the case open with a little work and buy a USB to SATA adapter for fifteen bucks.  It's not as pretty, but it does the job.

I had to do that with my 200gig external. My wife knocked it over cleaning. One little chip inside came off. Had to hook it to an external case.

The plot thickens.
How long had you the MyBook before it went belly up?
Thanks

I forget, honestly.  It was long enough that I was relying on the drive, but not long enough that I found it an acceptable failure, by any means.

On the bright side, once you know the secret knock, the case opens pretty easily:  If you look at the four recessed spots on the big side where the rubber feet can go, just like on Sesame Street, one of the things isn't like the others--it's an adhesive circle that hides the screw.  After that, there's some manhandling to do, but it's all obvious, at which point you can yank out all the plugs and replace them.

My non-engineering brain thinks that the Western Digital circuits probably aren't tolerant to power variations, so it burns out easily.  On the other hand, on sale, the external drives are cheaper than most internal drives, so that's not too bad a deal.

Thanks, Just wanting to dodge a future bullet since all my scans will be on this 500gig MyBook.
Knowing that in the event it is adaptable without the loss of the scans I can breath easier.

cheers
