We'll have to get an expert opinion on that.  I hope so- the only issue I have is 1, it's a fun book.  But wait for one of the PD experts to say if it's good or not.

Please PM JCOLAG with this question M.  It's the best way to get his attention.

Someone is in the process of reprinting Humbug (or getting ready to reprint it) right now, folks,
so my guess is that they probably have acquired some rights from the Kurtzman estate and from others. If I remember correctly, Humbug was owned by the artists who worked on it and folks like Arnold Roth and Jack Davis are still alive and quite likely still hold (at least part of) the copyright. I'd be VERY leery of posting issues here.

Peace, Jim (|:{>

I'm betting they wont be P.D. as well but I thought letting JC tell us would be prudent.
I'm not going to hold my breath on it.

Other than a 1957 digest (renewed 1985, RE0000271608, if anybody needs to follow up), I don't see any renewals.  Of course, without years, issue numbers, and so on, it's a little difficult to dig deeply on these things.

More importantly than simple details like that, though, is Jim's point that the book might have been artist-owned.  If that's the case, then the copyrights are split among the different stories.  That's a much more significant search, since the registrations and renewals aren't even necessarily under the expected names or in the expected years.

I'm nearly positive that Humbug was published by Kurtzman and the other artists. I'll ask John Benson - he will know for sure.

From Wikipedia:
"Although Humbug offered the same type of superior satires Kurtzman had previously presented in Mad and Trump, the small size was a genuine problem. It sometimes was the smallest publication in magazine racks, with the result that it was often hidden behind larger magazines. Despite a change to a larger magazine format with the tenth issue, it ceased publication with issue #11. Many contributors to Humbug were also the project's financial supporters, but their investments were lost when the magazine folded because of poor distribution."

Fantagraphics is reprinting the 11 issue run. Ads can be seen on Amazon.com already.

Where does the "Harley" come from, Modanim?
I've heard of Ellis Chambers, E.C. Chamber, Holly Chambers, and Hal Chambers (all of whom are the same person) but never Harley. Curious minds want to know.

JVJ:  Somewhere, in some comic (I think it might have been a "Cosmo Cat" story) he signs his name "Harley" (just Harley!)

Also, Old-time animator & sports cartoonist Jack Ozark talked about him.  Apparently Chambers was a "hep cat" in the '40s-50s who hung out in jazz clubs and smoked a lot of "reefer"!  No idea what happened to him after that.  Maybe someone like Howie Post would know.

Thanks, Narf -

Uploading Red Rabbit # 6, 7, 8, 10 & 11.

#6 is still uploading as I write (77%), so don't put it up for awhile!

Deerfield was a comic publishing company started by Joe Barbera & Harvey Eisenberg.  They tried to get rich as comic publishers, but had trouble getting distribution.

Joe Barbera, of course, made his fortune as a partner in the "Hanna Barbera" animation studio (Yogi Bear, Flintstones, Scooby Doo etc etc etc) Harvey Eisenberg stayed in the comic book field - best known as the artist on Tom & Jerry comics and many others.
