Alternate JSA
« on: October 03, 2010, 02:32:13 AM »

Check out this famous cover of the first appearance of the Justice Society of America, the first super-team in comics.

http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/File:All-Star_Comics_3.jpg

Who would you put in each seat for different companies? They don't have to be power parallels, just who you like.

For example, if Standard/Better/Great/Nedor/whatever had done one, they might have had, left to right:

American Crusader
Black Terror
Captain Future
Doc Strante
Fighting Yank
Grim Reaper
Miss Masque
Pyroman

What about Centaur, etc.

I was thinking of getting a comic art commission, and this famous cover would be cool to replicate.

I'dlike to see The Shield, Steel Sterling, Mr. Justice, Amazing Man, The Comet, Plastic Man, Doll Man, Major Victory, and The Green Mask. Just some of my favorites.

I'd want to see The Black Spider (Ace), Duke of Darkness (Croydon), Iron Skull (Centaur), Black Cat (Harvey), The Phantom Reporter (Timely), The Owl (Dell), and The Hood (Harvey) for starters.

Good choices. There should be a woman among them but the only one that pops into my mind right now is Pat Parker war nurse but I don't know if she counts. Did she have super powers?

War Nurse is a good choice...no powers I think, but that did not stop Black Canary, Black Cat, Woman in Red.  ;D

True enough. I like the Black Hood and he had no powers. Come to think of it my mother-in-law has no super powers per se' but has the ability to make me mute and unable to form an opinion.  ;D

No particular direct swaps:-
Miss Victory;
The Hood;
Black Terror ( for a bit of pure, unsubtle power);
The Ray;
Magno (and Davey);
The Web;
Blue Beetle.

And to be different, A non N. American suggestion:-
Asso di Picche ( Ace of Spades - the Hugo Pratt Masked man);
Ace Hart ( flight, strength, Ray gun, atomic energy);
Mister X (John Smith, the Italian superhero with the atomic ray in his belt and the 2nd. Italian hero after Asso di Picche, I think);
Mr. X The British masked hero from The Dandy, 1944 - Len Manners, private eye;
El Encapuchado ( Spanish hero from pulps and comics and a great way to shoehorn in a hood just like that worn by The Hood);
Electro Girl (British heroine from the'40's with, strangely enough, electrical powers);
Captain Atom ( the Australian Hero whose title outsold Superman in Oz. for a while)

This is great fun.  Already making a further alternative list.  Keep them coming.

That's a great selection. I'd love to see an international stew of heroes and heroines. Just imagine them trying to make a meal;
"You eat sausage made of blood?"
"What? Vegemite? Gross?"
"Meatloaf? Yuck!"
"Soup? Cold? Bleck!"
"Hot Dog? What ISN"T in it?"

Star Spangled Kid was already listed above as Yankee Boy it just got retyped. Too easy just to name any old hero you like. Come on give it some thought. Direct swaps from one publisher or perhaps a couple of smaller publishers.

OOOOOH-errrr!  These aren't just any old heroes.  You insult their honour.  I'll be sending round the Association of Alternate Anglophile Also Rans to have a word with you - and you wont like it.
This makes things difficult for me as I don't have a wide enough knowledge of which obscure America heroes are from which co.  I'll give it another go.  As for the Non USA list - no excuses.  Get your deerstalkers on and look them up.  I've got to do that with your lot.  Bye now.  I'm off for dinner.

Not meant to discourage your choice of heroes at all Paw. Just would like to see direct swaps. Definetly do not have to be American. Picking a European cast would be cool. What would be better is if you could include a picture and powers since most of us Anglos would not know them.

Well, I thought up an All Centaur JLA as opposed to JSA:

Superman= Amazing Man
Batman= Fantom of the Fair
Wonder Woman= Super Ann Star
Flash= Dash Dartwell, the Human Meteor
Green Lantern= Craig Carter and his Magic Ring
Hawkman= Air Man
Green Arrow= THE Arrow
Black Canarey= Blue Lady
Martian Manhunter= Magician from Mars (some time travel and gender bending involved)
The Atom= Minimidget (and Ritty, of course).
Aqua Man= The Shark

I've noticed that most people are Centaur fanatics. I'm an MLJ fan. I'm full of PEP but I do like some of the Centaur characters - Amanzing Man of course, and Fantoman.

I have a couple of non USA lists ready.  That bit is no problem and I'm also working on a British version of Teen Titans. (Since beowulf put up a JLA alternative). Problem is that my illos for the characters are on Photobucket and I've forgotten what to do to get a "clickable thumbnail"? on to GAC.  It's so complicated and if I press the wrong button I'm going to feel like a right dunderheid.  Can anyone help.  I'll even accept a bit of condescension.

(Innocent Human): "What the %*#@ are you?"

(The Eye): I Am The Eye! I See All!"

"Wow. Okay. But if you're just a big flaming eye, then how can you talk with no mouth?

"Er. . Uh. . I Mean. . . ." (Flies off into the night) "Flaming Eye!"
