Pep Comics introduced The Shield, the first patriotic themed super hero. Later, this title played host to a character still popular today and which would give MLJ its new name - Archie. Issues were renewed from #72 on please do not upload past issue 71.
Top Notch comics (AKA MLJ Comics) was launched by MLJ magazines, Inc. in December 1939. The title changed its name to Top Notch Laugh Comics from issue #28.
Top Notch Comics, edited by Harry Shorten, was the company's second anthology following hot on the heels of Blue Ribbon Comics. The Wizard was the longest lasting character running for 27 issues. Bernie Klein drew Bob Phantom - The Scourge Of The Underworld which ran for 22 issues. The Firefly appeared 19 times and Kardak the Mystic magician said abracadabra for 25 issues.
Popular war features included the adventures of an American flyer who joined the RAF during the Second World War. Irv Novick illustrated "Wings Johnson of Air Patrol". This comic was afterwards illustrated by Ed Smalle and Jo Blaire. Fran Fraser, the St. Louis kid, and Keith Cornell West Pointer were other popular comics published by Top Notch.
Top Notch laugh comics introduced such lovable characters like Snoopy McGook the Soapy Sleuth, Señor Siesta, Dottie and Ditto, and Gloomy Gus - The Homeless Ghost to its well-amused audience.
