Welcome to our sporting category, that features a range of real and fictional
stars of the day.
Frank Merriwell was created by Gilbert Patten,
writing under the name Burt L. Standish.
His first appearance was in a series of magazine stories way back in 1896.
Frank was a clean living sporting protege who also excelled in solving mysteries
and righting wrongs. He eventually progressed to a comic strip, Big Little Books, a radio
show and a film serial.
Another supreme athlete is Ozark Ike. He featured in a newspaper comic strip created by
Ray Gotto. However, unlike Frank Merriwell, Ozark is some what mentally challenged.
One real life superstar, who had a brief comicbook run was Babe Ruth.
In his 22 seasons of Major League Baseball Babe Ruth set numerous records, some of
which took decades to beat. Not only was he the major player of his generation
Babe Ruth is credited with changing the whole style of how baseball is played and
making it the popular game of today.
One last title to mention is Bob Swift, a hunting and fishing backwoods boy, with wonderful
covers created by Norman Saunders.
We have 42 titles and 2,837 issues in our 'Sports Category' for you to enjoy.
