One interesting side of our school category is the amount of titles that were
published in Great Britain, and also their longevity.
The Girls' Crystal was first published in 1935 as a story paper and continued
its run until 1953, when it transformed into a comic book and continued in that format for
ten years.
The Silent Three, was a popular comic strip published in School Friend
between 1950 and 1963. It featured a trio of schoolgirls:
Joan Derwent, Betty Roland and Peggy West. The boarders at
St. Kit's school fought crime and injustice both inside and
outside of the school, often wearing masks and hooded green robes.
The Hotspur featured the Red Circle School stories that became firm favorites with
its readers. This is just one of the titles published by D.C. Thomson, known as the 'Big Five',
which are also included in this category.
The emergence of The Dandy, The Beano and later television meant that the
circulation of British school titles gradually faded away.
We have 39 titles and 5,536 issues in our 'School Category' for you to enjoy.
