First time I learned of the existence of this particular comic book, live and learn? Actually its very very informative and we should be aware of man-made and natural disasters. F.E.M.A. courses are free and a must! Most of the states of the union face disasters ranging from earthquakes in California to floods in the east coast like Pennsylvania as well as hurricanes in Florida, the Carolinas and Texas near the Gulf of Mexico, to tornadoes and electrical storms, etc. Be prepared!

What the heck did Al Capp have to do with this? Li'l Abner is on the cover, but that's it.
   By The Australian Panther
That's a good question. I didn't know so went and looked for an answer. Here it is, 'Like many cartoonists, Capp made extensive use of assistants (notably Andy Amato, Harvey Curtis, Walter Johnson and Frank Frazetta). During the extended peak of the strip, the workload grew to include advertising, merchandising, promotional work, public service comics and other specialty work—in addition to the regular six dailies and one Sunday strip per week. From the early 1940s to the late 1950s, there were scores of Sunday strip-style magazine ads for Cream of Wheat using the Abner characters, and in the 1950s, Fearless Fosdick became a spokesman for Wildroot Cream-Oil hair tonic in a series of daily strip-style print ads. The characters also sold chainsaws, underwear, ties, detergent, candy, soft drinks—including a licensed version of Capp's moonshine creation, Kickapoo Joy Juice—and General Electric and Procter & Gamble products, all requiring special artwork. ' https://www.revolvy.com/page/Al-Capp And we think STAR WARS started the merchandising frenzy! GCD doesn't list an artist. I'd like to know who it was, its not bad work.

The roster of talent on the books from this company suggest there may be some involvement by Capp's third brother, the one who ran Toby Press. The art in the previous book about civil defense seems to be by Leonard Starr. I see some resemblance here, but not enough to say it is by him. It could easily be Alex Kotzky with some of the Johnstone and Cushing guys.

GLOSSARY OF CIVIL DEFENSE WORDS AND TERMS
  1) AIR BURST Detonation of explosive ordnance (nuclear or other) in the air. For nuclear bombs this means high enough in the air so that the fireball does not reach the ground.
  2) ALPHA PARTICLESPositively charged particles emitted by some radioactive materials. They are dangerous only if ingested, inhaled, or by other means enter the body.
  3) AREA TARGETA target covering a considerable space, as distinct from a point target.
  4) ATOMIC BOMB OR WEAPONA device which utilizes fission reactions to obtain energy for destructive purposes.
  5) BETA PARTICLESNegatively charged radiation particles that are hazardous to the body, both externally and internally.
  6) BIOLOGICAL WARFARE (BW)The use of living organisms or their products to cause death, disability, or damage in man, animals, and crops.
  7) CHEMICAL WARFARE (CW)The use of chemicals in the form of solids, liquids, or gases to cause death, injury, or damage.
  8) DOSIMETERAn instrument for measuring and registering total accumulated ionizing radiation exposure.
  9) EVACUATIONOrganized, timed, and supervised dispersal of civilians from dangerous and potentially dangerous areas, their reception and care in safer areas, and their return to their own home communities.
10) FALLOUTThe phenomenon whereby debris (dirt) particles, contaminated by radioactive material, fall back to the earth's surface from the bomb cloud.
11) FIRE STORMStationary mass fire generally in built-up urban areas generating strong, in-rushing winds from all sides which keep fires from spreading while adding fresh oxygen which increases its intensity.
12) GAMMA RAYHigh energy nuclear rays which can damage the body by penetration.
13) GEIGER-MUELLER (G-M) COUNTERHighly sensitive instrument for detecting radiation.
14) GROUND OBSERVERVolunteer aircraft spotter for the Ground Observer Corps.
15) GROUND ZEROThe point on the earth's surface directly below a nuclear bomb air burst, directly above a subsurface burst, or at which a surface burst occurred.
16) INCENDIARY BOMBBomb designed to initiate fires.
17) LODGINGA temporary place to live when evacuated before an attack or when homeless after an attack (distinguished from "shelter" which offers special protection against weapons and effects).
18) NEUTRONSHighly penetrating nuclear radiation particles emitted at the moment of explosion.
19) NUCLEAR BOMB OR WEAPONA device which utilizes nuclear fission or fusion reactions to obtain energy for destructive purposes.
20) PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFAREThe use by an enemy of rumors, half-truths, propaganda, and covert operations leading to panic, fright, and disordered flight, which may destroy a people's will to resist.
21) RADIOACTIVITYSpontaneous disintegration or nuclear transformation of certain atoms in which energy is released. The process is accompanied by emission of one or more types of radiation (alpha, beta, or gamma).
22) REFUGEAny enclosure that will give some protection from the effects of weapons in the absence of a specially built shelter structure.
23) SHELTERA specially built structure for protecting people, records, or equipment, from blast, thermal effects, and initial and residual radiation in attack.
24) SURFACE BURSTDetonation of explosive ordnance on or close to the ground or water surface. A nuclear bomb surface burst is characterized by the fireball touching the ground or water surface.
25) SURVEY RATE METERSPortable instruments such as Geiger counters and ionization chambers used to detect radiation and measure dose rate.
26) TARGETAny facility or group of facilities which because of large population concentration and/or for vital nature of the products or services to national defense is presumed to be a likely mark for enemy attack.
27) THERMONUCLEAR BOMB OR WEAPONA device which makes use of thermonuclear fusion reaction to obtain energy for destructive purposes.
