| Synopsis | I accompanied Inspector Gregory to the elegant art gallery of a dealer named Lakewood. At the front door lay a body, a friend of Lakewood's who'd been shot through the chest. Lakewood protested it was a mistake. He saw a man running from the gallery with a painting clutched to his breast. Not realizing it was a friend, Lakewood said he'd fired. "But I only meant to wound him", he pleaded. "At least the painting's okay. I doubt the story, Inspector", I said. I'll tell you why. In the case of the deadly art dealer, if the man had been shot through the chest while running with the painting, the painting would have a bullet hole, too. Lakewood had staged the entire crime.
