| Synopsis | A wealthy man's secretary said she'd been knocked unconscious by a burglar, and when she came to, she said she saw the burglar leap from the library window with her employer's strongbox filled with cash. "Apparently the burglar panicked", I said, "because the strongbox is still outside in the bushes". Opening the box, I discovered the neatly stacked piles of dollar bills. Not a cent was missing, but we had a burglar just the same. I'll explain. In the case of the neatly planned robbery, you recall the bills were neatly stacked in the abandoned strongbox. But if a fleeing robber had dropped the strongbox, the bills would have been scattered inside, not neatly stacked. The secretary planned to have the strongbox picked up later. Unfortunately for her, I found it first. | ||||
