SynopsisI accompanied Officer Glacken up the dusty, littered sidewalk to the Jenkins house and knocked. Mrs. Jenkins answered. Officer Glacken asked to see her son concerning a robbery. "We know the robber received considerable facial damage in the attempt", Officer Glacken said, "and your son fits the description". The woman protested that her son had just fallen and cut his face while cleaning the sidewalk. I interrupted her at this point and said, Your son is probably guilty. In a moment, I'll tell you why. In the case of the well-swept subject, if the son had seriously hurt himself cleaning the sidewalk, there had been signs of the walk being at least partially cleaned up. But you recall the walk hadn't been touched. A mother had lied.
