Notes | As World War II was starting, the Australian government decided to open Australia to European refugees. This was not universally supported by Australians. This pamphlet argues in favour welcoming such refugees to Australia. Issued by the Victorian International Refugee Emergency Council, it includes a map signed by the artists, K & F Martin. It is believed that K Martin is Keith Martin, a cartoonist who drew the Ben Bowyang newspaper strip. It is also assumed that he would have drawn the refugee face on the cover of the pamphlet. Australian comics creators were involved in the war effort, sometimes using their artistic skills, and also in the armed forces. |
