NotesMODERN ‘MAGPIE’ COMICS is a one-shot anthology comic, published by Frank Johnson in 1946. It includes HAWK LARSE by Noel Cook, BOWYANG BILL by Emile Mercier, JO AND HER MAGIC CAPE by Moira Bertram, CAPTAIN SPADGER by Frank Jessup, SHADOWMAN by Ron Broadley, ROCKY NED by Peter Chapman, QUENTIN QUAINT by Ron Broadley, and PRENDERGAST by Lock, as well as a few one-page humour and educational items. All the stories in this comic are episodes of features that have appeared in other Frank Johnson titles.

Maybe the "magpie" tie-in refers to the myth of magpies stealing shiny things--that is, "stealing" from other Johnson comics.

At the point when Frank Johnson was initially publishing comics, there were a range of restrictions designed to reduce the use of paper for non-war-related purposes. This included locking the register of periodical publications so no new comics (or magazines) could be added, which also denied access to postage discounts. Johnson was early in the publication of comics as one-off, uniquely titled publications that were legally books. Johnson had worked through a list of comic names, and then stated reusing them with 'The New' added, so Daring Comics and The New Daring Comics were distinct and unique. When the list was running low again, the magpie was added, so there could be a Daring Magpie Comics. The other Frank Johnson publications I refer to were simply other stand-alones. By the way, where stories continued, the collector had a more difficult time collecting all parts because there was no way of knowing when the next part would be. Frank Johnson published new comics frequently, with a weekly schedule sometimes being reached. (Your theory was more interesting than the reality!)
