Captain Marvel by KIrby and Simon
« on: November 09, 2018, 07:59:53 AM »

In activities away from this site I have been reading a collection of Atlas's 'All-Winners Squad'. In his introduction, Roy Thomas says that when Simon and Kirby made their break from Atlas, they were doing a lot of work for other publishers including a Captain Marvel Special for Fawcett. Is this so? and if so, do we have a copy on this site? Fawcett books are one area on CB+ I haven't had a good look at yet.
Cheers!

Thanks for the heads-up. You obviously know your stuff. But my curiosity is aroused. Are you using 'Erik Larsen' just as an avatar, which is fine by me, or are you either Erik Larson the non-fiction author [The Devil in the White City (2003)] - Probably not, due to the spelling. or Erik Larsen the comic book creator of Savage Dragon? You can't be Eric Larson the Disney animator, since he passed in 1988. You probably get asked this a lot. Anyway if you are new Newbie, welcome to CB+  8)

Cheers.

Erik, of all collaborators in the history to date involved with C.C. Beck and Fawcett Publishing. Is the very first issue of The Original Captain Marvel available to view here ? Secondly, did Whiz, Fawcett, Marvel or DC help boost and make Captain Marvel come to the limelight for readers and fans alike ? Lastly, Billy Batson sure has come along ways. And oh yeah screw Superman KaL EL.

I think Erik already answered your question, cbpdc1, but if you need a specific pointer to the location of CAPTAIN MARVEL ADVENTURES #1, here you go:

https://comicbookplus.com/?dlid=64977

Actually, there are two different versions posted here; that is Version 2 and appears to me to be slightly more readable, but both versions are scanned from microfiche film copies, so the resolution is poor, and less than acceptable compared to even an average scanned copy. This is pretty early work for S&K, and you can hardly even tell it's them in most places... but they were probably trying their best to conform to the look of Captain Marvel as previously established in WHIZ COMICS.

Most of the scans here of later issues of CAPTAIN MARVEL ADVENTURES look much sharper, so check those out for comparison:

It's clear from your work on Savage Dragon, where you've included the original Daredevil quite often, along with many other Golden Age characters, that you love Golden Age comics. Then there was Daredevil's epic showdown with The Claw, and just in the last couple of issues of SD, the return of Captain Tootsie and the Secret Legion!

I've sorely missed THE NEXT ISSUE PROJECT, and would have loved to see that continue. Was there material created for that series that never saw print (I seem to recall a couple of issues announced that were never released), and if so, would there be any way for you to offer it as a Print On Demand title (say, through Amazon's CreateSpace or Lulu.com), or as a digital download somewhere?
