Need recommendations for Golden Age comic for an 8 year old
« on: September 26, 2009, 07:30:03 PM »

Hello, I have a little cousin that's into comics (mostly Marvel Adventuers and Batman & Robin TAS) I was thinking on maybe letting him try to read some golden aga comics but I can't think of one that he could try

At first I thought that I'll give to read some super hero comics like Daredevil or the Blue Beetle but I couldn't find one that wasn't violent

I would appreciat any suggestions

Happy you must have tried earlier DD. It became less violent and the Little Wise Guys actually took over the comic. Try some later issues with DD and the LWG then some issues with just the guys are pretty good. Later Crimebuster issues of Boy comics should be acceptible. You can always introduce him the the first Marvel with anything from Fawcett. I can not think of any Quality superheroes or ACE as being too violent. Ace Comics and Magazine Enterprises I think are a pretty safe bet also. Spark Publications is safe.

Try Captain Marvel in CAPTAIN MARVEL ADVENTURES and WHIZ COMICS, especially in the postwar era.  They're pretty safe and satisfying.  Also PLASTIC MAN in his own title thru about #26.  I think you'll enjoy most of them.

They are not superhero books, but you might see if he likes Jingle Jangle comics. Some of the George Carlson stories therein might have just the right touch of silliness for an eight year old.

Of course, without sounding (I hope) too preachy, there's nothing wrong with a little violence in an adventure story, and if he's reading any of the DC "kids" books...well, I seem to recall it wasn't too long ago that they recapped Batman's origin (no explicit violence, but I think a gun, a sound effect, and a kid in a puddle of blood qualifies as "violence") and had the Spectre do some rather heavy-handed things.

Now, you're right that Blue Beetle is over the top, except for some key points in his run, but after a couple of issues, Daredevil does (as mentioned) settle into "Saturday morning" territory, for the most part.  Most of the Quality characters tend to be more on the cartoonish side, even when violent (that's "most," mind you).  As mentioned, Fawcett is often similar.  As you might also imagine, since they built their companies on the backs of small children, that Dell and Harvey (less so for Harvey) would be parent-approvable.

I think Plastic Man (Quality) for an 8 year old is a perfect match.
Very silly stuff that I'd think most kids would eat up. Wonderful Cole art.

Some of the early Police Comics Plas stuff was a little on the dark side but I think things toned down a lot once my pal Woozy showed up.

Funny thing though is that most of the comic books here were originally produced for a young audiance but of course what was suitable for a child of eight years old Sixty/Seventy years ago and today is not the same  :(.

Carl Bark's "Uncle Scrooge" series from Dell Comics, and then from Gold Key Comics, is among the best children's literature every produced. The series started in the early fifties and continued at least into the mid-sixties. While it features cartoon ducks and other anthropomorphic characters, the characters are far more human than those found in almost all comics which featured so-called "super-heroes" and should still have a great attraction to any literate eight year old (the stories actually have to be read, not merely looked at, to be fully appreciated).

Also from Dell, you might try "Little Lulu" and "Popeye," both of which are also classics of a kind and well suited to young readers. The "O.G. Wottaschnozzle" back-up feature in "Popeye" is a series of little gems.

"Plastic Man" appeared in his own title as well as in "Police Comics" and is a character who can simultanously appeal to both children and adult intellectuals. Any comic featuring Plastic Man published in the sixties or later is a kind of counterfeit literature and does not really feature Plastic Man but someone who imitates him poorly.

I stongly recommend looking for reprint collections of "Uncle Scrooge" and "Plastic Man," because anyone who would give "good" or better quality copies of genuine golden age comics to an eight year old  should be thrashed. The books won't hurt the child, but the child could be deadly to the books.

Happy to help HH.
When I was 12 the cover to Silver Streak #7 was awe inspiring the first time I saw it.
It only took me another 20+ years to finally Read the book!

I hope your cousin enjoyed the scans,
