Think about it -- comic books were a popular medium before the attack at the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Afterward, an explosion of patriotic themed heroes and characters appeared on the market to complement those that had come before World War II.

Pearl Harbor changed our world. For us Golden Age Comics fans, Pearl Harbor serves as a marker for some of the most exciting and creative comics that would ever appear.

I want to share two special sites with you. The Golden Years & Pure Excitement: founded by scanning legends SCRA1941 (Eric aka Steve Rogers) and Bill Nolan, respectively, these sites were among the first of many that offered public domain Golden Age goodness online.

Friend recently passed who was at the signing of the peace treaty with Japan. He was on the ship and is even one of those "in the crowd" that is on the picture in Life Magazine.

Just before checking out the GAC site I was reading the morning newspaper which has a story about a 90 year old Pearl Harbor survivor by the name of Garth Brown who lives just a few miles up the road from me at a VA housing facility.  He barely managed to get off the USS Oklahoma after it was hit by three torpedoes.  Clinging to a piece of wood and covered with oil he was rescued before flames could reach him.

After Pearl Harbor he somehow managed to survive the sinking of two additional ships before the war's end!

He and his wife (of 67 years) are still hanging in there and he's still her hero!
