I am having trouble with Freddyfly's uploads.  What is the secret for changing the file name?  Can you give me a little advice?

I am a big fan of the Owl but I can't read anything that is loaded up as a zip file.  Can this be fixed?  I can't change the file type either.  Wouldn't it be better, or more user friendly, to load them up correctly so they are easier to read then to ask people to purchase additional software to unzip the files.  Just wondering.

There is nothing to fix as there is not one "correct" way to store these files.  Personally, I prefer zips or rars since I unarchive them and don't use a program like CBR to read them.

Those who scan and upload the comics are providing you a free service, it seems you could do a little bit to find out how to bes use it.

Why can't you change the file type?  It is a relatively straightforward operation on a PC and I assume a Mac.  In any case you needn't purchase software to unzip the files.  It comes with PC (I don't know about Macs.)  And there are free down-loadable programs that do it as well.

But you don't have to unzip the files in any case.  Even if you don't change the suffix, CBR will open a zip file if you use "open with" or whatever is equivalent on a Mac.  And if you really never ever want to unzip a file, you could always associate the .zip and .rar suffixes with CBR, by choosing "always open with."

I think if you experiment just a little bit you should find at least one of these things will work for you.

Well the hard working scanners that upload the files get no reward and choose to do what they do out of love for comics and comic fans.
They can upload the file as zip, rar, cbz or cbr. Why should they spend more of their time just to please you mason? You can change the file name as easily as they can. Learn how. Turn on show file extension then you can change it. Windows comes with a free unzip program and many free programs are available. I find it rude to be able to get something for nothing then complain about it.

I'm sorry that the zip files do not work for you...I prefer them over cbr/cbz and I actually have not even tried to make any other format than a zip.

freddyfly and the sainted scanners/uploaders who share their efforts with us are doing the best that they can. They cannot be expected to go insane trying to create multiple formats for each file type. I do not see how it is practical.

Have you tried to up pack the zips and then read them through CDisplay? I realize that it might be more trouble than it is worth to you, but we cannot (and should not) tell scanners/uploaders what format to use.

Consider that you might use Filzip or IZArc to open the zip files and transfer the jpegs into a new folder that you can then use with CDisplay to read the file.

Again, apologies.

Apparently no one is sympathetic but it is still frustrating to me.  I have down loaded a lot of files and spent several hours searching for some way to change the files using my PC computer.  Or find someone to open them.  A lot of the files will open but it is usually freddy's files that won't.  Don't know how to fix it but I still haven't purchased new unzip software or found any on my PC.

Unsympathetic? Not true -- again, have you tried to up pack the zips and then read them through CDisplay? I realize that it might be more trouble than it is worth to you, but we cannot (and should not) tell scanners/uploaders what format to use.

If you want help, bb, the first thing is to tell us what platform you're on (PC or Mac), what OS you're running (Windows XP, Vista, 7, 32-bit or 64-bit, or Mac OS X or whatever). When we know that, perhaps we can point you to some specific setting or some capability that you might not know you have with that OS. You got a problem, we might have an answer, but the first task is to get real, real specific...

edit: doh! Jim... got it, bb, it's a PC. What OS and do you have "show file extensions" turned on?

Peace, Jim (|:{>
