I am a big fan of the Owl but I can't read anything that is loaded up as a zip file. Can this be fixed? I can't change the file type either. Wouldn't it be better, or more user friendly, to load them up correctly so they are easier to read then to ask people to purchase additional software to unzip the files. Just wondering.

There is nothing to fix as there is not one "correct" way to store these files. Personally, I prefer zips or rars since I unarchive them and don't use a program like CBR to read them.
Those who scan and upload the comics are providing you a free service, it seems you could do a little bit to find out how to bes use it.
Why can't you change the file type? It is a relatively straightforward operation on a PC and I assume a Mac. In any case you needn't purchase software to unzip the files. It comes with PC (I don't know about Macs.) And there are free down-loadable programs that do it as well.
But you don't have to unzip the files in any case. Even if you don't change the suffix, CBR will open a zip file if you use "open with" or whatever is equivalent on a Mac. And if you really never ever want to unzip a file, you could always associate the .zip and .rar suffixes with CBR, by choosing "always open with."
I think if you experiment just a little bit you should find at least one of these things will work for you.
