Silver Streak 10 - Just the Cole/Briefer/Guardineer art

Frankenstein 7 by Briefer

Hi Ho #1 - drawn by oddball/druggie artist Harley Chambers (cover inked by LB Cole)

I'll take a break from uploading for now

Well, welcome to the uploading fold modanim!
Many thanks for the uploads!

One question - are these your own personal scans?  We like to give the original scanner credit when we can.  If they are not yours and you happen to know who did them could you let us know here or at the end of the file name?  ie Frankenstien 7 - 'whomever'

A really great start.  We would love to see more if you had any.

Take care,
-Yoc

Yes, I scanned all these books.  Started scanning my comics a few years ago as I saw them crumbling gradually into dust every time I read them!

Most of my scans are @ 300 dpi, tga or psd -  then scaled down & jpeg'd for easy reading as .cbr

Excellent work Modanim!
Scanning these ticking pulp time bombs is the ONLY real way to preserve them for the future.  And you're generously giving a LOT of GoldenAge fans a chance to see them too!  :)

I hope you don't mind but I've merged your paper scans with our existing fiche scans of Fantastic 09 and Silver Streaks 8 + 10 to produce cover to cover scans.

While we would never turn down an incomplete scan for any needed book we try to share cover to cover scans to allow everyone the closest thing possible to the original books as they were sold all those years ago.

Take care,
-Yoc

I have an older smaller scan of Frankie #7 which includes a Simon & Kirby story (reprinted I think from some issue of Headline) I've merged those 6 pages into this scan and reuploaded it to FTP.  It's now 45 of 52 pages. (The previous scan actually had 39 pages despite its name)

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Generally I scanned only the REALLY GOOD stuff from a lot of my comics, so most of my scans are not "complete books".  Thanks for filling in the gaps.

One of my favorite "oddball" characters was the Black Dwarf from Chesler's "Red Seal" comic.  I've got # 15, 16, 18 & 21 if anyone else has the others, this would be a cool set!

Today I'm uploading Dell 4color# 244 - "The Brownies" by Walt Kelly

Check on the Four Color issues for PD status.  There has been a long ongoing project on ABPC to scan all the Four Color issues.  Most are scanned.  The remaining unscanned issues (from series two) are:

  5 Raggedy Ann
  6 Smitty
  7 Smokey Stover
27 Mickey Mouse (Scanned from fiche)
38 Roy Rogers
63 Roy Rogers
94 Winnie Winkle
98 Lone Ranger (Scanned from fiche)

If you have any of those, many people would greatly appreciate scans.  Please PM me

I don't see many (any, actually, for the years that I've checked) renewals for Four Color, but because of the "icons" nature of the book, the usual caveats apply that the Brownies stories may be protected under a different copyright.

I'm by no means a Kelly IP expert, so hopefully someone else knows more than I would.  But assuming that the Brownies material hasn't been published previously, then the book is clear.  The publishing history described at Toonopedia suggests that it was only at Dell, though, so the outlook is pretty good.

The rule of thumb on Dell is not to upload until the renewal experts have cleared it; Dell is far and away the biggest renewal nightmare of any publisher.  (Most others are either everything or nothing, with a few exceptions.)

Which is not to say we don't appreciate the effort to get more Kelly material; there are a lot of hard-core Kelly fans here.

Hi Modanim,
I like your taste sir!  :)

We'll have to hold off adding your Brownies scans until Aussie + JCOLAG can confirm they are Public Domain or not.

I too enjoy Chesler's oddball comics.  In fact he's got his own section on the site here:
http://goldenagecomics.co.uk/index.php?cid=81

As you can see some of the Red Seal books are already up but only #15 and #21 are on your offer list so please feel free to upload #16 and 18.

You can use the SEARCH link above the GAC banner to find out what books we have and don't have already.

Thanks again for the lovely work so far,
-Yoc

As I mentioned, it's past me.  The issue itself doesn't have any renewal (I have yet to find a Four Color renewal, though I haven't searched intensively for one).

Provided that the stories aren't reprinted (which would mean checking the copyright on the source issues), it's definitely public domain.  The GCD hasn't indexed it and I'm not a Kelly guy, though, so I wouldn't know if the contents are original.

The first Brownies Four Color (192) is copyright by Oskar Lebeck.  The rest are all copyright by Western Printing and Lithography.  Previously, The Brownies had appeared in most issues of New Funnies 69-85.  The early stories, at least, show copyright by K. K. Publications in the splash panel.  K. K. is also who published Walt Disney Comics and Stories as I recall.  I think it's simply Western by a different name.

I have scans of all issues of Four Color featuring the Brownies and can upload them if you wish.

I believe that the only Brownies Kelly drew were in FC 192 244 293.  The early New Funnies stories are definitely not him.  He might have had a hand in some of the later FC issues, but he didn't draw them by himself certainly.

That solves that, then.  If Kelly's involvement was limited AND late in the run, then it's definitely public domain.
