Site Up - commentary
« on: April 05, 2010, 04:09:09 PM »

I still need to resolve the issues of the name servers, however, I see the site is back up. I want to have some solid confirmation of this to ensure this does not happen again.

I have also eliminated any debates between DCM and GAC-UK. To my helpful moderators, if there is any debate or conflict I missed please delete thouse as well.

We are blessed that we have alternatives for all users. The sites will still focus on their priminary focus of free PD comic books for all. DCM maybe more focused here, and GAC-UK will probably expand here. I am sure both sites will eventually be similar in this regard as well. GAC-UK will go a new creative route, but remain true to its original purpose, enabling users to focus on one site, or having users go on both sites. Its all good, and this works out for all because we can all manage sites in our own creative direction.

With this said, there is no debate, conflict between the two sites. I myself, support DCM and I am on the site myself. I like the direction its going in, and their new features are excellent improvements of GAC-UK. The creation is great, and builds and grows this medium for us all. Furycomics.com also has new inovative approaches to viewing comics and I really enjoy the themes. Its all good, and important, that we do not alienate users, as some may enjoy a certain style and approach of a site then the other.

I am always open to new ideas so please fire away as we build communities that promote our interest and passion.
Next week although I work in the Government by day will be in class at night relearing the art of drawing cartoons with Ty Templeton, who has drawn for Marvel. I am big fan of supporting and promoting new and old artists, and the characters they create and this will be one of the fundemental shifts of GAC-UK along with a few others.

In terms of downloading, as long as the server (bluehost) allows it, the site will have no major restrictions. I think we have it set to 1 gig a month for newbies (which I agree should be eliminated and just have members). VIP is unlimited. I am also working on new previliges for VIP. What would VIP's want here?

The new site is being worked on as of this note, I would give it 2 months, or less. I will gradually have users test it out. Perhaps VIP's can help here?

Thus, as of right now, I am will willing to work with anyone who can help or has a creative direction for the site in addition to my own.

I love Ty Templeton's work, so you have my jealous eye on you!  ;D

And it is good that there is peace now. We all do not have to be super big fans of each other, but we can sit at the same breakfast table without a food war.  ;D

Just something to add:  I have resigned as global moderator here.  I will still be part of the JVJ scanning crew and uploading all my books here but will no longer be "on staff", as it were.  Since I haven't been able to spend as much time as I want helping out here recently it won't really make much practical difference.  I just wanted people to know what happened and that it was at my request.

I should have some new JVJ books to post in the next few days; I've got lots scanned and awaiting editing.

Why you are unable to download from GAC?  The site is being modified for a massive upgrade, hence, some features need to be "pushed" by mods; i.e., downloading bandwidth for new members.

Narf or Astaldo will "push" things for you shortly, have patience, you will have access soon.

I am not a VIP, but would love it if you would have a little button somewhere like "WANT TO BE A VIP?" and then on clicking it, tell us the ways we can become one, after all is set.

I know donations will be a way, but let us know if there are other ways too.

Here is a suggestion, a benefit for VIPs that would really make it good to be a VIP... Some of us are still bound to dial-up service due to economic reasons, and dial-up is SLOW. As you probably know, dial-up providers sometimes DISCONNECT us at any time, and sometimes connections are simply LOST, resulting in a broken download stream, and then ALL IS LOST if we are downloading.

One thing we on dial-up can do is use a download manager, to help us resume a download from the point at which it was broken, so we can download a file in segments.  However, my download manager says that your server DOES NOT support RESUMING downloads.  For VIP members, maybe you could set the servers to ALLOW RESUMING BROKEN DOWNLOADS.  That would allow VIP with dial-up to download a file in pieces, eventually getting it.

I am not a techie of any sorts, but since the site is being worked on now, maybe that could be an improvement that can be worked in?  Please think about it.  As it is now, it may take MANY attempts for us to download 1 file, and each attempt makes the system think that it has been downloaded, as I remember it being mentioned somewhere that it can not distinguish between a complete download, and a broken partial download. This can also give a false reading in MOST DOWNLOADED, as I may have actually tried say 20 times to finally get one file, and it will look like the file is very popular, when in fact it simply was 19 broken streams and one successful one.

That's all I can think of now, but maybe it helps.

So glad to simply have you back, and look forward to having all full speed again!  Thank you for just being there.

Good idea Chuck. I have no idea if it can be done or not. I am thinking of making a micro file section with small versions of files for the dialup people. Tia and maria upload shrunken files that dialup people can snag

There are sites where you can download separate pages, more convenient for dial up

That sounds really helpful, being able to see a few pages before committing to a download here... can you list a few sites that offer separate pages for download?

Tks

I think I see the ones you're talking Jim. I'll let Narf know and delete them.

Is everything supposed to be running so that members can obain downloads.  From what I find myself, nothing has changed and downloading is prohibited.  Help, please.

Martin,

I checked your last message and while you posted that you were having download issues, you never reported back on if there was a resolution until now. Much has changed around here -- a lot of good things are going on in behind the scenes to make this site a great one to visit and interact on -- let us not ruin that with words that might be interpreted as filled with venom.

I have personally checked into your situation, and you now are set up to download. If you have problems in the future, I encourage you to contact me with a pm and I will assist you in reasonable time.

Welcome back, please do not be a stranger.

B.  :)
