Fathers & Sons (Mothers & Daughters)

Here's a thing - in the new Superman & Lois series, our protagonists have twins (Jonathan and Jordan - two more to add to our discussion on Twins). Do they have superpowers? Wait and see.

Meanwhile, it got me thinking - other than the prolific Marvel family (and Alan Moore's amazing homage in Tom Strong) what parent-child superhero or costumed hero couplings can you think of?

Over to ace researcher, Panther........

Well obviously there are Batman and Damien. And the outrageous Summers Family (in the X-men books)

X-Men: Every Member Of The Summers Family (& Their Mutation)
https://www.cbr.com/x-men-summer-family-mutation/

This list doesn't even list all of them. Leaves out Dad, for one.
Quote
As leader of the Starjammers, Christopher took the name Corsair

And I think Scott has another son Via, Madelyne, the Black Queen.
And it gets even more complicated.
SUMMERS FAMILY TREE
https://uncannyxmen.net/family-tree/summers-family-tree

And I'm pretty sure this needs to be updated by now.
Jeff Johns created a number of parents and Siblings couplings in his run on JSA, there have been three Wildcats. Then there are all the Hourmen and all the Starmen and Johnny and Jesse Quick.

Magneto and his [4] children? Marvell and GengisVell?

The fantastic Four's Franklin and Val?

There were the Super Sons, a Bob Haney creation?  But rather than teaming up with Superman and Batman, they seemed always  to be rebelling against them.  Wasn't it finally shown that they weren't"real" and were computer simulations?   I have to admit that the whole idea just didn't appeal to me and fortunately I've forgotten a lot about them.

Black Canary of course. Dinah Drake and Dinah Laurel Lance. Mother and daughter in some versions of DC.s confused history.
Fury, daughter of G.A.  W.W. and Steve Trevor.

There are 2 more father/son pairings available in comics here on the site. The Black Owl was the father of Yank and Doodle. And then there's Professor Supermind and Son.

I agree, I hated the Super Sons.

Now that you mention it, Infinity Inc. and the more recent incarnations of the Justice Society include several children of heroes. Huntress who was the daughter of Batman and Catwoman, the new Hourman and Starman are sons of the originals. Infinity's Silver Scarab was the son of Hawkman and Hawkgirl; he used their Nth metal to create armor, but more recently, he took on the mantle of Dr. Fate.

In the second season of the Plastic Man cartoon, he had apparently married his girlfriend in the time between the first and second seasons, and they had a really ugly baby called Baby Plas. I hated that kid! Thankfully, DC didn't bring the character to the comics.

And event though they aren't super heroes, I can't resist mentioning cartoon father/son pairs: Looney Tunes' Sylvester and Son, Hanna-Barbera's Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy, Hanna-Barbera also did an update of the Pink Panther where he had 2 young sons who hung out with the Rainbow panthers. They also did a Popeye and Son where he married Olive Oyl and had a son. Aesop and Son from the Bullwinkle show.

Hanna-Barbera also adapted Charlie Chan which not only featured his number one son, but also all 9 of his other kids who formed a band called the Chan Clan and they attempted to help their father solve mysteries. I think 5 of the 10 kids were boys. So it's probably the most prolific example of cartoon fathers and sons!

In the comics Plastic Man had a son, great name. His superhero name was  Offspring.

Luke O'Brian

https://dc.fandom.com/wiki/Luke_O%27Brian_(New_Earth)

John Byrne once did a miniseries, Superman & Batman: Generations in which he postulated all manner of future offspring of Superman, Batman and other DC heroes.

Centaur comics The Shark and Father Neptune.

Aquaman and Aquababy.

The entire lineage of The Phantom.

The Inferior Five were the children of successful superheroes.

Bob Haney did create the '70s version of the Super Sons & while the stories were weird I kind of liked it for some reason.

My eyes popped out when I read there was a Charlie Chan cartoon show (it took me ages to get them back in)

Yet, here it is:

.....and a Captain Marvel TV series that I also missed:

Clearly, I spent way too much time studying in the seventies and not maintaining my education

Centaur Comics Man O' War was created by Mars, so one could claim Mars is his 'father'.

I guess that would also mean Professor Horton is the original Human Torch's father.  ;)

Bombshell, from Lev Gleason?s Boy Comics, was the son of the Roman god of war, Mars.

Your mention of a character with a parent from Roman myths reminded me of a few more mythical parents: Charlton's (and later, DC's) Son of Vulcan
Wonder Woman's mother has been a supporting character in her daughter's comics for years (and even assumed her daughter's heroic identity in the revamped history of the JSA)
Thor's father, Odin
Hercules' father, Zeus in the many different comics adaptations of the character.
Charlton's golden age heroine, Diana the Huntress, was based on the Roman goddess, so her father would have been Jupiter and her mother someone named Latona.

Drifting over to Christian theology, there is also Marvel's Son of Satan (who I guess is now called Hellstorm) and presumably his sister, Satana

In almost the time since this thread was started, It's got even more complicated.
First, Gods and Mythology:- Of course we have Thor, Loki, Baldar, long list sister - really lost - from another comic universe - Angela, Tyr God of War, - I quit ! full list here.
How Many Siblings Does Thor Have? | Earth?s Mightiest Show

Well first lets be accurate and say, Judaeo-Christian mythology.
Back in the Golden Age, and on CB+ we had Sampson for one.
But really that's a whole other thread. Both Marvel and DC have quite extensive and complex demonic family trees and DC even had an angel in the JLA at one time.
So lets not go there.
But now! Siblings are bursting out all over!
Morrison started something with his turning The Xavier Academy into something resembling a real school.
We now have 'Strange Academy' - probably my favourite big two book at the moment. Dr Strange founds a magic academy with all the Marvel magic dudes as Teachers, and students who act like real teenagers. They include:- The son of Dormammu, A teenage Frost Giant and it's just been revealed, the son of the Enchantress. This book has delightful things like - [Spoiler] latest issue - School Away trip - to Asgard - Splash page:- Yellow school bus on the rainbow bridge with excited kids hanging out the windows.Loved it.
Then there is DC's Titan Academy, with the original Teen Titans as teachers. This one is not quite so good.
But wait, there's more.
Marvel has just released 'Red Widow' Yes, you  guessed it, we now have a teenage survivor of the Red Room making her own way in the US.
We haven't mentioned of course that Spiderman now has a [of course long-lost] sister. I think. Getting a headache.
DC, if you have missed it, has now decided that there are an infinite number of alternate universes and to hell with it, lets play with them all.
So now you pick up a DC book and you haven't got a clue how it fits into continuity, if at all.
Batman, I think, now has another son, and we haven't mentioned Black Lightning's daughters and Red Tornado's Granddaughter. And then there is the Ray, son of - or is it Grandson? of the Ray.
There are more, but I think I will lie down now.
No, since you don't have a headache, I think I will give you one. The Summers family tree is even more complicated that I thought.
https://www.marvel.com/watch/digital-series/earth-s-mightiest-show/scott-summers-mutant-family-tree
And now? They all live together as one incestuous? Happy family on the moon. With Wolverine as House Guest. No, I'm not joking.
Cheers!

Wow! I hadn't been keeping up with current comics, so I hadn't heard of Strange Academy! Sounds like a lot of fun! I'm now curious who the other teachers are. The first two Marvel magicians I thought of were Dr. Druid (who I read had died, but that's not always permanent in comics) and Brother Voodoo (or did they change him to Dr. Voodoo? I can't remember).

I've been a Titans fan ever since the Teen Titans segment of the Superman/Aquaman hour on TV (that's what first brought me into comics), so I'll have to check out Titans Academy. They kind of touched on that theme with the last Titans series I bought where the original Titans brought in younger heroes to help train, but it wasn't a school setting.

Makes me think of when DC started publishing the Super Friends in the 70s. E. Nelson Bridwell established that the Hall of Justice was a school for young heroes, and Wendy and Marvin were just the first trial students, who eventually graduated and were replaced by the Wondertwins. He explained that Superman, Batman and Robin, Wonder Woman and Aquaman were chosen as the first instructors because they had all training and/or worked as heroes since they were young. I always thought it was a shame the powers that be at DC did not include the Super Friends into their mainstream universe (except for the Global Guardians), since most of the stories were no more silly than a lot of the mainstream DC stories from 50s, 60s, and 70s. The main problem was the name Super Friends, which really sounds like a silly name for a crime fighting team and as the name of a school, but I always thought they could easily explain away by saying that's a nickname given to them by the press, and that they were always just a branch of the Justice League. I know they eventually did bring Wendy, Marvin, and Wonder Dog into the Teen Titans (but they erased the whole back story Bridwell established by making them twins and then quickly killing them off), and they similarly brought the Wondertwins, first into Extreme Justice (with a different back story) and more recently in their own book, which at least is closer to their original look.

Here is a list of the STRANGE ACADEMY FACULTY.
As you can see, a wide range of Marvel's magic characters, and a couple of surprises.
Meet the Faculty of Strange Academy
https://www.marvel.com/articles/comics/meet-the-faculty-of-strange-academy
Zelma Stanton, who most of you won't be familiar with, is a character I love, and Docs LIbrarian and kind of Secretary.

I think I am correct in believing that 'Super friends' and 'the Wonder Twins' originated in Television cartoons and were then adapted into the DCU. Recently Brian Michael Bendis brought them back into the DCU. For a brief time anyway.
