Happy 99th birthday today to Mad William Gaines - sadly, he died aged seventy.

I'm not taking sides in the EC comics debate (I can see both sides of this one) but I have to admit Bill gave as good as he got:

If I'm not mistaken His first comics work was selling Sheldon Mayer a joke for Scribbly in Dell's The Funnies #5 https://comicbookplus.com/?dlid=16819 page 30.

All I?ll say is that there?s always a good time and good place to voice concerns with a good intent, with as much understanding and evidence as possible, at least to make sure that not only children are negatively affected/inspired by exposure to seeing gore or African native jungle stereotypes (which even EC used quite a number of times in spite of stories like Judgement Day), and that parents themselves, understanding that they tend to look out for children more than non-parents, should sooner or later come to terms with how they expect their children to function in the outside world, which can get cruel, as what can happen in reality. And that perhaps this should serve as a reminder, if nothing else, of how higher authorities should also come to terms with working with creators of a new medium, as opposed to being framed in a hostile setting. I don?t appreciate censorship, but I still feel confident in thinking that even the comics code didn?t destroy the quality of the industry as some may think, with how the 60s comics turned out and all. Despite the bumps in the road, I think it worked out, as life tends to also do.

African native jungle stereotypes

In recent years some Africans have kidnapped and butchered albino Africans to consume their flesh as a magical cure all. Other African immigrants in the UK have sacrificed children to their river god. Slavery is alive and well in much of Africa today.
Unfortunately horror stories involving Africa are far too much a part of real life.

Just like there?s a right way and a wrong way to approach concerns regarding kids being exposed to gore in comics, I?m sure there?s also a right way to showcase the cruel reality of what goes on in other continents without being dehumanizing in the portrayals themselves, regardless of original intent otherwise. Even Gaines seemed to agree that there?s a limit to what you can expose children before it starts getting out of hand, and that it really just sums up how figuring all of this out this a little more complicated than some people, including comic defenders, might want to even admit.

Kind of difficult to "dehumanize Witch Doctors who kidnap children in order to make potions out of their body parts.

Witch Doctors who kidnap children in order to make potions...

Barbaric? Yes. But is it really any less barbaric to walk into a church or a business and murder a dozen people in the name of keeping the wrong people in check? Is it less barbaric to let a dictator murder and chop apart a journalist, then punish him by giving him a sweet arms deal? A couple of days ago a death cult worshiped around a golden idol of their savior and with him dismissed the deaths of half a million of their fellow beings as a fairy tale created to make the Leader look bad. I'd think that would qualify as barbaric. Am I saying this makes the acts you describe less awful? No. I'm just suggesting that perhaps we should each get our own houses in order before trotting out some Africans to point our fingers at.

Guess what, none of this has gone un noticed and under reported.
Should we ignore child sacrifice entirely in order to concentrate only on political shenanigans that pit party against party?
I've never seen anyone object to depictions of crooked politicians or racist organizations in fiction.
Does reading the various crime stories on this site make you believe that all Americans are junkies and bank robbers?
Should we ignore the atrocities of the old Soviet Union for fear of making modern day Russians feel uncomfortable?
How about the Genocidal Campaign of the Red Chinese against their Muslim minorities? How about their state run slave labor colonies?
If an unarmed Black suspect is killed by police its world wide news for a year or more with news sources fanning the flames of riots that cause further loss of life and destruction of tens of millions of dollars in property while the "mostly peaceful protestors" block the exits of buildings and try to burn the place down with people trapped inside.
Should Portland's local new outlets be forbidden to do stories on how the entire city has been trashed and the streets reek of human waste after these peaceful protests while the smoke of burned out businesses still hangs in the air?
Should any of the above acts be un touchable, beyond the ability of anyone to even acknowledge the existence of?

Some may feel that because all the worlds problems are not yet solved that we should ignore all such problems. Ignorance may be bliss, until it hits home.
Others may feel that only the problems that may deliver votes for their party should receive any attention at all.
