Narf, you've been so quick since we both got promoted that the only books I've been in TIME to post have been my own!  :)

I would say you've been making me look bad, but you're making the site look good and that's more important.

(Fawcett's) Funny Animals 10 now uploaded.

This book represents the last of my backlog of scanning.  It will by no means be the end of my scanning and posting- I've got at least 3 books currently being edited by others, 2 in the mail to me, and a few bids on eBay just for starters.  If JVJ is willing to use me as one of his crew of scanners I'll be as busy as ever, and even if he doesn't I should be able to average a book or two a week at least just from shopping.  Nevertheless, this is a bit of a milestone in any case.

I've saved a book that has a lot of sentimental value for me for last; even though I don't expect others to particularly appreciate it like I do.  But this was one of the first GA books I ever owned.  It was the first 68 page GA book I ever had; and if you stretch the definition of Superhero to include Hoppy it was the first GA Superhero book I ever owned.  For several years it was the oldest book I had.  I find it fascinating as a wartime artifact in any number of ways, from the single staple to the one-page Captain Marvel war bond ad at the end.  And the Captain Tootsie ad on the back cover has actually made me buy a Tootsie Roll more than once; doing its job 65 years after it was originally published.  Beyond all that, it reminds me of just how amazing those first few GA books I found as teenager were.  There is a very special sense of wonder that was there on those early books that I've long since gotten used to.  :)

Anyway, I don't expect anybody else to react to this book like I do.  But I hope you find it interesting.  And I hope my little ramble has reminded people just how good we have it now; I've read more GA books from this site than I ever expected to see in my lifetime when I picked up this book 20 or so years ago.

Well said Eric!
And much like you a very early exposure to MLJ's heroes in 1979 has created a soft spot for the publisher in me as well.  Thank-you Archie for your Superhero Digest #2.  I still own it btw!

And thanks to Eric for sharing the personal story, it's certainly made me download it.
:)

(Psst, Eric.  I'm leaving Geo's latest book on the FTP for you.  Maybe you can get it up before Narf sees it...  ;)  )

Oh, just as an offer:  if anybody has some book of mine they would like me to take a second crack at, let me know.  I think I've gotten reasonably competent and consistent as I've taught myself how to scan over the past several months.  I'll never be Cimm, but I know I've gotten much better than when I started.  And some of my earliest scans make me wince pretty badly now.  I don't want to revisit them if nobody cares, but if there's something you would like me to try again on let me know and I'll give it a shot.

How about another 'Crack' at Crack Comics_037 ? I have a reasonable but CF-less issue so I could suppy a few fills for the worst pages.

Ok, I've got an new book, a slightly updated book, and a greatly updated book for you tonight:

First, the new book:  Animal Comics 15 now available for download, with two fairly long Kelly stories (Pogo and Cilly Goose) in addition to the cover and back cover.  I know people were expecting the #10 next, but that is still on the way.  Hopefully no later than next week.  Both Kelly and Stanley fans will be glad to know I'm also expecting a #29.  As well as one other issue if all goes well.

Next, the slightly updated book:  Animal Comics 26.  Nothing new here, I just put up a version with the improved cover scans from JonTheScanner so people only need to download one file instead of two.  If you already grabbed Jon's cover and edited the file, you don't need this one.  If you haven't, there it is.

And, finally, the completely rescanned book:  Police Comics 85.  This was one of my first scans, and may very well be my single most embarrassing effort.  You people were awfully nice to the new guy a few months ago.  :)  The new version, while certainly not the effort of one of our expert editors, is quite a bit better.

As far as future projects go, I will indeed be joining JVJ's crew of scanners.  I'm starting out with a nice selection of Targets from v2 and v3; as well as the rest of the Authentic Police Cases.  Plus I'm always looking for new books for myself, so we'll mix things up a bit as time goes on.

That's really great news about joining the JVJ project!  I'm certainly looking forward to more Target stories some day!  :)

Having finished my JVJ books, I just scanned Animal #29 and #15 yesterday.  #29 is half edited, OE, so you probably don't need to scan that one.

I also have #10 and #2 which I will scan next, unless you tell me you have those and want to do them.  Henry Peters has #4 and is looking for it after his recent move.  That will leave only #1.

I also have a better cover to #14 (I think it is).  The one posted here was marked all over.

I'll be happy to leave those to you while you wait for more JVJ books, Jon.  Sorry we wound up duplicating effort on the #15.  And while I'm understandably anxious to say anything is absolute until I have the book in my hands, that other issue I mentioned being on the way?  It's #1.  (Knock wood).

So with any luck, we'll have the complete Animal Comics run done very soon.  ;D

I am high bidder on an Animal 15 that I was going to scan. Not very high bid so I will probably lose it if not oh well.

I'm happy to say that I just put a box of comics into the mail for OtherEric, including most of my early Targets and the missing Authentic Police Cases. I'm including my index card notes on each of these books and I really feel the need to expound on the symbology that Hames Ware and I use in our note taking. This particular thread may not be the best place for it, so I'm going to add a comment to my "Introduce Yourself" thread.

If it makes more sense to move what I put there, yoc, to a different place, please do. Since the comments will apply to ANY of the scans that include our data cards, I think it's imperative that viewers translate the symbols properly.

Enjoy the books, Eric and I'm preparing the next shipment for Geo next.

Peace, Jim (|:{>

I'm thinking your symbol's post should be given it's own thread so it can always be easily found Jim.

As you wish, Yoc,
Of course, people who download a scan with a card at the beginning are probably NOT going to know what it is or where to go to decipher our scribblings. Still, I appreciate the effort and the thread.

Being a GCD'er I would love for Jim to write up all this info in one place to assist in the GCD indexes.

I have, quite literally, thousands of index cards, Narf,
and I would be quite happy to share those as well. The MAJOR problem with them is that they were compiled over a period of decades and many of them do not represent the state of my current knowledge. That is, they have errors, and in some cases SERIOUS errors, so it's difficult for me to just hand them off to someone to put into the GCD without a major review of each one. And for that, I simply don't have time. It frustrates me a lot to know how much knowledge is sitting in those cards. But I also know how difficult it is to retract erroneous data once it's gone into the comics ether. There must be some way, but right now I just don't know how. I've spent a lot of time coaching Doc V. on the Atlas artists and he's probably better than me now. That's a great relief - to know that someone is carrying on and learning more. He's also working with Hames and me on the Timely Masterworks credits, but I'm finding myself a third wheel on those because I am still learning the early styles of the Jacquet and Timely shops.

And the MOST frustrating thing in the world to me is the GCD and its lack of speed and consistency. Every time I try to put data in, it seems to hang up and leave me waiting. If you really want more info from me, try to fix THAT and let me make better use of the time I DO have.

Rant is over. I'm calm now and I'm thinking nice thoughts about old comic books. Space Action #1 in fact with its Lou Cameron cover is sitting here waiting for me to look through it before packing it up for Geo.

The GCD is on the fastest track in a long time to moving to a new server. If you think you have problems try being an editor. Uploading a hundred sequences from a foreign reprint series where you have to go back and put in reprint notes in the originals. So I feel your pain intensified. Thanks to some old guard with some much needed new tech blood we may be there soon. Let us hope so.  We would welcome your indexing on a spread sheet that we could convert.
