Now uploading Tops in Adventure (Ziff Davis) #1.

This comic (at least this copy) consists of the contents from
He-Man #1
Hawk #3
Football Thrills #1 or 2 (I'm pretty sure though not positive)
Crusader from Mars #2

The back cover and ibc are missing.

The stories in the Football Thrills portion are:
Casual Kazmaier of Princeton 6pp
The Texas Quaterback Alvin "Bo" McMillin 6pp
Nevers vs. Notre Dame text story 2pp
The Gentle Giant: The Story of Bronko Nagurski  5pp
"Red" Grange's Quarterback Quiz 1p
Don Hutson: The Alabama Antelope 4pp
Educated Toe; The Story of Charley Brickley 5pp
Red Grange's Pigskin Puzzlers 1p

The contents including ads are identical.  It looks like 4 remaindered or left over comics inserted into new covers so copies may differ.

Jon, just to make things more confusing, the GCD lists the Tor books as 2A/B being the two different sized books with the same interiors and 2C as being the next issue (what you have called 2B).  Blame St John for numbering them all the same.

I don't know how much extra trouble it was to do the flat black-and-white versions of the books but they look great!  You'd never know there was a double image.  I'll keep both in case I lose my glasses sometime.  Btw, are we seeing the red or blue plates?  Kudos!

Yeah after I uploaded them I checked and saw that they were labeled differently elsewhere.  Having only scans it never occurred to me to label the different sized originals differently as you can't see it in the scans.

I made the b&w in Photoshop as follows.  (the menus may differ for different versions)

Scan full color at 300 dpi (I think that's really necessary in these 3Ds)
Take it into Photoshp and under image change the mode from RGB to CMYK.

I then picked the Magenta channel though the cyan channel might work better in some cases.

Again under Image, change the mode to grayscale and discard teh other channels when it asks.

Then adjust the contrast.  I tend to do that using autoadjust first and then modifying that, but YMMV.

And of course don't forget to save the result.

I found better results using the CMYK colors than the RGB colors hence the first change in mode.  I suspect it worked better because we're dealing with a print original.  (So the answer is we're seeing the "red" channel.)

Note that in those evolution pages you got both the cyan and magenta channels as they had completely different images.

Answering my implied question from before.  I found an ad for Tops in Adventure in Captain Fleet #1 (and only).  It lists actual story titles or descriptions for each of the four included comics, so I'm pretty sure there were not alternate versions of this comic.  I.e, it was not like the EC Annuals where they tossed different assortments of left over or remaindered comics into new covers.  They probably were left overs; they just used indentical copies.

A HUGE thank you for this one, Jon, AgentUup.  That's two of the 5 great Kelly comic book projects (at least, that I know of) scanned and posted on this site!

OtherEric,

I was just wondering what you were counting as Kelly Projects.  I assume the two here are

Animal Comics
Fairy Tale Parade

others would clearly be:
Pogo Comics  not PD but it's all scanned & available elsewhere)

Our Gang  I think we decided not PD

Christmas / Easter with Mother Goose, Mother Goose & Nursery Rhymes and might as well throw in Tiny Tots #1 here. (These except for TT #1 are all Four Color issues and all scanned if they're permitted here.)

His work on Brownies (in Looney Tunes and Four Color though unfortunately not most of the individual Four Color issues are not his work.  Again these are all scanned)

His work in Raggedy Ann (probably not PD)

The Pogo comic strip of course.

Now uploading

Weird Thrillers (Ziff Davis) #1-5.

All are JVJon scans except #1.  Astrp3 previously uploaded a Weird Thrillers #1 but apparently from a copy with a separated cover as the back cover and inside back cover included do not match the ones on JVJ's copy nor as shown on Heritage.  I've replaced the ibc and bc and also put in a nicer scan of the front cover.

Yoc, I must apologize.  I knew I shouldn't have uploaded so late at night.  I forgot JVJ's index cards.  I've re-upped the Weird Thrillers #1-5 with the index cards included.

Here's the amazing thing on the weird thrillers #1:  It's a photo cover, and the "monster" isn't wearing a mask or anything; that was Rondo Hatton's real face.

Thanks for the books, Jon!

Jon, you mentioned Kelly projects and the Brownies earlier.  I was wondering whether someone could do an archive project of the Brownies stories from Raggedy Ann + Andy Comics and New Funnies (not that I have all of them).  They are not part of the Johnny Gruelle or Walter Lantz licensed characters so perhaps they could be legally separated and made available.  Or am I getting into a touchy area here?

Incidentally, only the first two Four Color Brownies are by Kelly.  One of the ones posted here (#293) is not Kelly, though there is some question as to whether there might be some Kelly pencils on the cover pages.  Don't believe everything you read in Overstreet.

Thanks for scanning the Weird Thrillers!

Yes I know the later Brownies are not by Kelly.  The Brownies appeared in Four Color 192 244 293 337 365 398 436 482 522 605.  All of these are scanned (as are most Four Color issues).  Only teh first two are definitely Kelly.  The Brownies also appeared in New Funnies 69 71 72 74 76 77 81-85 (the last three were text stories).  I don't believe any of those are by Kelly.

Kelly had lots of art in Raggedy Ann + Andy -- most certainly and possibly there is some in every issue.  I have paper or scans (or will get scans of all issues except 20 30 35 37 (also missing centerfolds on 11 & 29).  If anyone has those missing issues, I'd love to help compile a Kelly collection from them.
