Enjoying this. 1/ Hard not to believe that Niclolas based many elements of his character on 'The Phantom' - and not just the costume. The scarab as an item that inspires fear, the hand-held torch with the 'Blue Beetle' symbol - pre-Batman? 2/ He waits till somewhat into the stories before Dan Garrett gets an origin. Dr Franz turns up about 4 stories in and I'm still waiting for an origin for him. 3/ Nichols can draw but mostly doesn't bother to try very hard. The writing is also about as basic as it gets. 4/ This is the third character I know of that becomes a hero after his parents were killed by Criminals. Batman of course and earlier, the Spider. In this case, tho, it is only the father. 5/ Nichols would make an interesting psychological study. His villains all like to torture women. [Hair-pulling in one instance] and he has at least one enormous explosion per story. And Dan keeps coming into contact with gorgeous women whom he rescues and then walks away from. And he has no regular girlfriend. Hmm! 6/ He changes costumes after the first story. I quite like the suit costume tho. Thanks Frabig, it's good to be able to trae the evolution of the character.

The first story is interesting in that the Beetle seems to be presenting himself as a criminal to gain the trust of genuine criminals. Blue Beetle = Green Hornet? In the second story he dresses in a short-sleeved tunic, a cowl with antennae and no mask. The third story adds the mask. By the fourth story the antennae and short sleeves are history and he is pretty much as he remains during the Fox years. One rarely if ever sees such kind of rapid evolution these days. And I wonder -- is his outfit meant to be chain mail? Must make running and swimming a bit of a challenge.

This is an amazing collection. Astonishing that the Fox years alone amount to nearly a thousand pages of Blue Beetle. There's no question that the Beetle started as a Green Hornet clone. That sure didn't last long. One issue! I presume Victor Fox felt that long underwear heroes were where it was at and ordered the change. Though the Beetle's costume remained mostly consistent after his fourth appearance, the details changed from artist to artist. Most noticeably some artists drew the chain mail texture on BB's costume while others left it plain so it looked like cloth. The medallion on BB's forehead appeared, disappeared, and changed size and shape. It also changed color from blue to yellow and back again. In a couple of stories the Beetle wears a holstered pistol a la The Phantom. Unless I missed something he never actually drew that gun. He's shown using a gun from time to time but when he does it seems to come from nowhere.

Thanks, so much, Frabig, for putting all Fox's "Blue Beetle" stories together, in chronological order, so new readers (like me) can see how the series developed from its beginning. As I didn't read Superhero comics back when they were issued (nor even currently, other than when they are assigned by our reading group), and so, wouldn't even know in which other Fox series titles they were printed. Excellent new front covers, and a nice quality of the inside pages. I enjoy your compilations. Keep up the good work.
