A good place to start this category is with Little Miss Sunbeam, created by Ellen Segnas as a marketing symbol for Quality Bakers of America. After many attempts Segnas saw a girl in Washington Square Park, who became Little Miss Sunbeam. She is still used on marketing and had a short-lived comic book title.

In 1918 Robert Ripley launched Champs and Chumps, a cartoon, featuring sporting feats. Renaming it Ripley's Believe It or Not!, he hired Norbert Pearlroth who would spend 52 years finding unusual facts. The Believe It or Not! franchise has moved into most media including comic books.

Lester Kroll, using the name John J. Anthony, hosted what many radio historians consider this the first talk radio show. During The Goodwill Hour listeners phoned in with their marital problems. Kroll, originally a New York cabbie, claimed he studied at the Institute of Marital Relations, which was as false as his name. A fitting fact with which to end this section!
