Micky Spillane's 'Mike Danger' has a secretary called Velda and a cop buddy called Pat Chambers.
Tryout for Mike Hammer. I don't know what predated what.

Mike Danger was the precursor. Spillane's first novel, I, the Jury (1947), featuring Mike Hammer made so much money that Spillane never had to work in comics again. If he'd been able to sell Mike Danger as a syndicated strip as he'd hoped, everything might have been different.
