Alex Raymond regularly tried out different techniques during his tenure on Rip Kirby. Here he uses elaborate cross-hatching and contrasts of light and shadow to create one of his finest RK stories. It's funny how the story is placed in a mythical 20th-century Communist country, but the settings and costuming hearken back to the 19th-century comic operas that influenced Raymond's Flash Gordon.
