Hi! I'm Bob Stump!
« on: December 02, 2006, 03:49:34 AM »

I'm an old fart -- closer to 60 than 50. Married. Two kids, daughter grown & married, & son in mid teens.
I work with computer apps / development. Heroes is my favorite TV show. I'm a cat person -- have 4 cats. But can tolerate SOME dogs (<grin>) -- we have 2, one a big fat lazy hound (my kind of dog) & the other a chihuahua. Also have chickens -- pets with eggs as a bonus, not for meat.

I've been reading comics since around 1958 & collected DC comics etc. thru the Silver Age. I read most comics & varieties of comics during the 1950s & 1960s.

I bought sold & traded comics at local conventions during the 1970s & early 1980s.
Sold most of my collection in 1980s -- & have regretted selling 'em ever since.

I USED to have many Police Comics, Smash Comics, & Crack Comics (mostly Capt. Triumph issues, many drawn by Crandall), Young Allies #1, Batman #16 & other early Batman, various S&S Shadow Comics, early Wonderworld with Flame by Lou Fine, issues of Green Lama, various Ace & Standard, etc. etc. etc.

I STILL HAVE about half of the Dell Tarzans, all the Dell John Carter of Mars (am I allowed to upload here?), all the Charlton Space Adventures with original Captain Atom stories, all the Manning Magnus Robot Fighter, various 1950s westerns (some Dell Western Roundup, DC Dale Evans, a few early Dell Gene Autry, a Charlton Tex Ritter & a Lash LaRue), etc.

I also have some old fiche, but probably all of 'em are DCs & Timelys. I don't have a reader anymore -- I'll gladly trade the fiches for whatever.

I also still have a bunch of 1960s fanzines & a couple maybe earlier ones.

I also have an accumulation of comic book and comic strip reprint books....

Hi Bob,
Welcome to the board!
Sounds like you've read your share of comics.   ;D

Sadly I'm sure your Dell books wont be allowed here because of copyright issues.

Enjoy catching up on your Quality memories here.  There's a TON of their books up on the site.

I've been working my way through the Dell Four Color scans on the newgroups, as well. What an amazing comics title. So much quality and diversity.

The Dell John Carter series was nice, as well. I have the first couple on paper and I think they've been scanned as well. My share on DC++ hubs is mostly Golden Age and Silver Age defunct companies.

And Quality. God, what a wonderful artist Reed Crandall was. Y'know, I heard a podcast recently of a phone interview with Gene Colan and he talked about just standing and staring at Crandall's original art in the Quality officers. It was particularly moving as his voice became very emotional when he related the sad tale of Crandall's fate by the 1970's, living in near poverty as a night watchman. The sad fates of so many of these wonderful artists and craftsmen always tinge my appreciation of this form with a bittersweet flavor.

>I've been working my way through the Dell Four Color scans on the newgroups, as well. What an amazing comics title. So much quality and diversity.

I haven't been on the newsgroups for years. I'll have to check 'em out -- I'd like to get scans of many of the Dell comics.

Back in the late 1950s one of my uncles gave me a stack of Dell western comics -- mostly TV westerns.
& later a couple my parents were friends with shared their Dell comics with me -- I read a bunch of the Disneys, Lulus, etc.

>The Dell John Carter series was nice, as well. I have the first couple on paper and I think they've been scanned as well.

I got my scans of the 1st couple John Carter issues on the Jesse Marsh (main Dell Tarzan artist) site.
& I have paper copies of all 3 Dell issues. The 2nd issue, the Gods of Mars issue, influenced me re religion as a kid & remains one of my all time fave comics.

>My share on DC++ hubs is mostly Golden Age and Silver Age defunct companies.

I regret selling my (complete) Tower comics collection. I even liked Undersea Agent.

I still have most of my Charlton hero comics -- Capt. Atom, Sgt. Steel, Blue Beetle (Ditko version), E-Man,
Doomsday Plus One, etc.

>And Quality. God, what a wonderful artist Reed Crandall was.

Yeah, I like Crandall, Cole, Eisner, Fine, etc. Quality stuff.

>Y'know, I heard a podcast recently of a phone interview with Gene Colan and he talked about just standing and staring at Crandall's original art in the Quality officers.

I have a couple pages of (supposedly) Gene Colan DC Hopalong Cassidy original art.

>It was particularly moving as his voice became very emotional when he related the sad tale of Crandall's fate by the 1970's, living in near poverty as a night watchman.

If memory serves, Fred Guardineer (who did Zatarra & various Quality etc. magicians) became a mailman in the 1950s.

>The sad fates of so many of these wonderful artists and craftsmen always tinge my appreciation of this form with a bittersweet flavor.

At least Crandall didn't cut off an ear....
