This certainly has echoes in the modern USA. All these old comics assumed the threat would come from the left (communism). We're seeing that the same techniques work from the right (fascism) as well.

Interesting use of "drouth" for drought.  I use "drouth" regularly, meaning thirst.  Burns uses it in Tam O Shanter.
"When chapmen billies leave the street,
And drouthy neibors, neibors meet,
As market days are wearing late,
An' folk begin to tak the gate;
While we sit bousing at the nappy,
And getting fou and unco happy,
We think na on the lang Scots miles,
The mosses, waters, slaps, and styles,
That lie between us and our hame,
Where sits our sulky sullen dame.
Gathering her brows like gathering storm,
Nursing her wrath to keep it warm.
"

As crash notes about USA, I see something similar, although not likely to cause regime change, here in UK, with the rise of UKIP and some poorly supported ultra right wing parties and groups - National Front for instance.

Though me thinks you exaggerate greatly and it is best to keep political talk off the forums

Hmmm ... I would disagree a little bit of politics gets the forum messages going and these are timely observations.

Personally, I agree with Paw and Crash and think that the world is currently heading very much in the wrong direction.
