A rather gruesome tale. Child Protective Services would get involved if this book were given to a little kid today.

Definitely a gruesome tale! As I recall, in the original Sambo story the tigers stirred themselves into butter rather than ripping each other to bloody shreds. I remember a chain of pancake houses with the Sambo name, way back when I was a kid. I understand that the chain originally used the image of a stereotyped African boy, but by the time I became aware of the restaurants, they had changed him into an Indian (East Indian, not American Indian) kid. This would have been the early 1960s.

ah yes Crash.  I remember Sambo's restaurants well from when I was a So-Cal kid. It was always my favorite pancake place because of all the jungle murals on the walls filled with tigers, monkeys, elephants etc.

they were a fairly far reaching chain, my wife worked at one sometime in the past in Arkansas. The last time I remember going to one was in New Mexico in the mid-1990's.
