I remember the first time I went to Butlins as a child. It was a hot summer’s day – the Move were playing on the Tannoy, California Man. Everything was free and there was something new on the hour every hour. I did things I’d never done before – roller skating, water-chuting. I thought I was in Paradise and have never felt quite the same excitement about a holiday ever since.

Look at page 5 – you’ll believe a man can fly. Old Oliver Passingham – what a genius with the pen-and-ink!

I always rather liked John Creasey – big fan of the Gideon of the Yard TV series and The Baron of course, living out of a suitcase. Amazing to think Creasey wrote 600 novels at the rate of more than one a month.

The two Toff movies (Salute the Toff and Hammer the Toff) were both believed missing for decades but were rediscovered six years ago and have been released on DVD. They star John Bentley (later Hugh Mortimer, the husband of Meg Richardson in the soap Crossroads) as the Toff.
