New - Exciting 'magpie' Comics

This week...

New: The Adventures of Smoky Dawson 7 (see below!)

Expanded: True Pirates Comic 1

Pirates and Westerns are two genres that were popular in the Australian Golden Age (in prose fiction as well as comics) that haven't been covered as much as they could be here. Some rectification this week.

The Smoky Dawson comic is partially on the site already (as Smoky Dawson vs the Bat). Hopefully that'll be removed soon. I'll be adding info about Smoky Dawson as a long lasting pop culture icon in Australia, but also about the fictional adventures spun off from Smoky's persona, and on the apparent unofficial crossover with a British comic character, the Bat. The comic requires a bit more context than most others! (I'll also add a Tex Morton comic later, just to cover off the the real life musician with a fictional adventure sideline sub-genre)

This week's comics:

New - Hurricane Comic 1

Expansion - The Further Adventures of Middy Malone

Special comics, this time: the return of anthology comic series (rather than one-offs), and a big colourful special edition for the festive season (what do you mean, you don't find pirates festive?)

This week's comics:

New - Kokey Koala and His Magic Button #36

Expansion - Trig Matson Comic #2

Two anthology comics. Kokey Koala is a funny animal character, a rarity in Australian-produced comics other than in one-page features. There's also a good one-shot superhero called Shadoman (not to be confused with Ron Broadley's Shadowman) which seemed like a good start to a series with potential, sadly not to be. Tig Matson leads with a western, but has a pilot-hero with some science fiction elements, and a detective series. Great variety!

This will be my last upload for 2024. I expect to resume uploading when I get back from holidays, in about 3 weeks time.

To be confusing, the two comics are both 'new' but also an 'expansion' of series already with a presence here on Comic Book Plus. They are:

Action Comics series 2 #35 featuring the Lone Avenger is a product of expanding the existing Action Comic with a companion title called Action Comics - different numbering series. The two Action titles featured adventures of the same character.

Comic Library #15 featuring Navy Combat. Comic Library evolved inro a rotating set of three features, all of which were spun off into their own titles. Navy Combat (sometimes called True Navy Combat) is already represented on this site.

So, back again.... I'm aware og two Kickstrter campaigns

This week's uploads are:

New - The Pink Elephant Ring, an off-kilter detective story by Will Donald (with 3 single page humour strips)

Expansion - The Authentic Story of the Kelly Gang, which collects the serialised retelling of this history by JJ Keneally and Stan Ballard which appeared in The Australian Boy Fortnightly in 1954

Despite the Kelly story being often retold, it's a story that will never die. I'm aware of two Kell-based comics which should be Kickstarter projects this year, one a new story and the other a reprint from the 1970s

While my personal preference is for character-led adventure stories (mostly in the superhero, detective and science fiction genres) I'm planning to try to include genres that aren't my favourites - but there'll still be more in the adventure genres as well. I've started moving in this direction already, I'll just be being more conscious of doing it

Thanks Dan, for uploading all these interesting Australian comics that most of us would probably otherwise never get to see and read.

I don't see these 2 listed in our "Latest Comics" section, so I take it that in your "This Week's Uploads", you announce what you plan to upload later this coming week.  Is that correct?

This week...

New - more Will Donald adventure with The Brass Vulture, not quite like any other bird statuette you may have heard about

Expansion - Devil Doone #29

Slight delay as I discovered I'd rescanned and prepared a comic I'd already uploaded some time ago, so had to get another one ready. Ah well...

One of the functions of posting in this part of the forum is so the administrators know when things are waiting for approval. I post what I've uploaded here straight after doing it, so there may be a delay before they are viewable, but the admins usually send things live quite quickly.

Is "The Brass Vulture" a Noir-style mystery, with a similar-style plot to "The Maltese Falcon"?

I think the idea of a bird statuette arises from the Falcon, but this is a real genre blender with a father and son explorer team, a hoarding hermit and his gun wielding ape offsider, and some treasure smuggling gangsters, set on a perilous jungle island. As a creator, Will Donald is creative and unpredictable in the elements he uses in his stories, which I enjoy as the story twists and turns - but it is a story, not a collection of disparate elements.
