Heroic Fantasy/Fantasy Comics in PD?
« on: December 12, 2024, 08:39:05 AM »

Hi there,
does anyone of you know about comics/magazines/Pulp books in any language that are about and feature Heroic Fantasy or Medieval Fantasy? Going thru the Content the Fantasy Category is all this Whimsical Fantasy stuff I'm not looking for. I'm more into the Conan the Barbarian/LotR Style stuff. Any tips about where to look or what to look for?

Thanks in Advance,
Jōji

There wasn't much of this sort of thing in Golden Age comics. Most historical fantasies were variations on Prince Valiant, and there weren't many of those.

The one exception I know about was Crom the Barbarian, an imitation of guess which notable pulp character. Crom (written by Gardner Fox, drawn by John Giunta) appeared in different Avon comics. As near as I can tell there were three episodes, one in Out of this World #1:

And one each in issues 1 and 2 of Strange Worlds.

Other members probably know of more examples--this is just the only one I've come across.

Not sure if this will help, but Dell had The Black Knight which was set around the time of the Crusades his adventures ran in The Funnies #46 - 62. https://comicbookplus.com/?cid=1418

According to the Grand Comics Database (GCD) Toby had a four-issue series called the Black Knight (different guy than Dell), but we only have the first issue here. https://comicbookplus.com/?dlid=3116
Looks like IW/Super reprinted the issue and we have that as well. https://comicbookplus.com/?dlid=16948

The Gallant Knight ran in Dell's Feature Funnies #7-20 https://comicbookplus.com/?cid=1300 and Feature Comics #21-24 https://comicbookplus.com/?cid=885

The Golden Knight ran in Fox's Fantastic Comics #1-20 https://comicbookplus.com/?cid=1395

When I see a question like this, my immediate response id "someone must have done this work already!" So I looked.

There's a blog called Dark Worlds Quarterly, which is associated with a magazine of the same name. They've done a post on this topic, and then a follow up. They are at https://darkworldsquarterly.gwthomas.org/sword-sorcery-comics/ and https://darkworldsquarterly.gwthomas.org/more-golden-age-comics-for-sword-sorcery-fans/. Can't promise all the comics are here, of course, but hopefully this helps! (Previous responders have mentioned items that are on these lists). Also, the initial list include more modern comics, but they are in a publication date order.

If you are familiar with Indy Planet--a website that lists, for sale, small press comics that are print on demand.....

Atomic Comics has made available 1 issue (so far) of Savage Sagas, which features the main character of Crom the Barbarian.  They also have some Spacehawk and Rex Dexter material.

Atomic was/is trying to recreate the look of a 1970's comic in art, tone, and dialogue.  I've purchased some of these comics ($6.00 ea.) and was shocked--shocked I say!--at the printing and paper quality.  The product beats almost anything for sale today in the floppy world.  And yes, I think they achieved their goal of recreating the 70's look and feel.

I'm a huge fan of Tim Fuller's work on Sham Comics.  He does PD comics by printing the story intact while changing all the dialogue for some very hilarious results.  Some of this material was released to comic shops, but more of the same continues on Indy Planet.

Lastly, If you're a fan of Big Bang Comics, new issues are available on Indy Planet as well.
