Using Imagery of Public Domain Comics and knowing if it's PD
« on: December 27, 2024, 04:45:25 PM »

Hello,
I got a lot of good tips about Heroic Fantasy/Sword and Sorcery Type Comics here, and now I'm thinking about using some of the Art for my TTRPG I'm working on. I think it would be nice to have the fighting Heroes of these comics explain Stuff. I'd use Panels matching the Topic and Expand the Speach Bubbles to put the Explanations into it. Besides that I'm starting a zine about Dungeon Crawler Boardgames (especially HeroQuest) and woul love to translate, change the Stuff up a bit and Post the Comics as one Comic per Issue. My Understanding is that this would be okay, right? I'd tell the Author, Artist and Publication it's taken from, obviously.

And if so, are all Comics posted here Public Domain? I'm asking as I goth linked external Sites that link to a lot of Comics, if I find them here am I right to assume they should be Public Domain? No guarantees I guess, but thought tobe?

Thanks in advance again,
Jōji

Quote from the past, still relevant and always will be!

"As none of the staff are lawyers, or indeed have any legal training we have been advised not to give guidance on the subject. We don't normally take advise, but have grabbed it on this occasion"

Thanks. I get that. And that‘s why I added the „thought to be public domain“ to it. Of cause they, and really no one, can guarantee that.

Problem is, PD is not administered the same way in every country or jurisdiction.
And what is PD now, may not be at some time in the future, depending on Multinational media companies and their lawyers. We have been asked to remove material when its status changed.
CB + is not only PD as much as we can tell, but but we are also voluntary and non-profit, so we don't make waves.
Here are two names to look at, 'Craig Yoe' and ' Gwandanaland Comics' both of which are doing what you propose.

cheers!
