OtherEric's Uploads
« on: June 19, 2008, 07:55:52 AM »

Well, since this is my first effort I would appreciate somebody verifying that I actually got the books uploaded correctly:

Target Comics v3 n04
Police Comics 85

I would appreciate any feedback as these are my first efforts at scanning books; I'm sure there are probably some simple ways I could make them better.  (Any ideas on dealing with a fairly bad spine roll, for example? The edges on a few of the Police pages are slightly blurry because of it.)

Nice job Eric!
;D
Both books made it up to the FTP fine and look very nice.  I was especially impressed with the entire Target book's level of artwork.  Not a dud in the book!

As for the spine roll - perhaps a heavy book on the scanner cover?

Thanks very much for sharing these!

Glad to hear it; It feels great to finally be contributing rather than just taking the books others have posted!

I'll try the weight on the scanner trick next time I have spine roll to deal with.

And, since we finally got the go-ahead, I'm uploading Dell's The Funnies #14.  Sheldon Mayer's Scribbly is the highlight; but there's a lot of fun stuff in there as well.

My current projects are the Target 6/2 and about 7 more issues of the funnies JonTheScanner didn't include on his list; that should keep me busy for a week or so while I start on project B: figuring out what other PD books I have that we don't already.

Sounds great Eric...
Gotta love that Scribbly!!

Say, you wouldn't happen to have any Phantom Lady issues not on the site would you?  Or perhaps paper of some of the fiche ones from her Quality and Fox years already here?
I've been after the 50s IW reprint book - Great Action #9 for ages now with no luck.  It's got most of  Phantom Lady #23 which has Never been reprinted in Any form yet.  All Top 11, 16 and 17 also have stories of PL that we've never seen.

Thanks again for the shares.  Welcome to the league of scanners good sir!

Sorry, no Phantom Lady.  I'll double check a few other items, though:  I do have some Matt Baker stuff I'll put high on the list.

And, after a quick check: Authentic Police Cases 12 & 33, Jumbo Comics 99, and Pictorial Romances 10.  Those I might get to quicker; 36 page books are a lot easier to do than 68.  (The PR 10 is particularly nice if you like Baker; he did the whole book.)

WOW!!
Baker overdose!
  :o

There are no scans of Any of those books Eric.  One had a b&w story reprinted in the AC Comics line but that's it.  I'm so looking forward to these one day!  Not enough Baker and St. John on the site!

But I hope Scribbly takes priority over the others,

Well, the Funnies are what I most want to get scanned and posted; so yes they have priority in general.  BUT, if I have some free time on my work days (I work weekends) I'm more likely to work on some of the smaller books since they take so much less time.  You'll have several more issues of the Funnies ready to post by this time next week, though.

If you really can't wait for the Scribbly pages themselves, I've compiled a cbz for my own use featuring all the Dell Scribbly pages I have so far, either my own issues or scans found online.  I could upload that if you want; but I don't know how well such a compilation would fly.  It has all 5 pages from Popular Comics 6-9, as well as the Funnies 4, 9-14, 16-19, 23-26.  All paper scans, although the pages from the Funnies #26 are somewhat small.  (And I really wish I could remember where the heck I found the Popular Comics pages; I've got no clue how they wound up on my computer.  I'm _really_ glad to have them, though. ;D )

Hi Eric,
Many thanks for The Funnies scans!

I think a Scribbly Collection would be quite fun.  Of course we could only host the Dell appearances.

Here's the credits I have for his Popular Comics appearances:

Popular Comics #006 [Jul'36][FICHE]-68pg-c2c     -Rolster
Popular Comics #007 [Aug'36][FICHE]-68pg-c2c     -Rolster
Popular Comics #008 [Sep'36][FICHE]-68pg-c2c     -Rolster
Popular Comics #009 [Oct'36]-68pg-c2c     -Teto7totoro
Popular Comics #019 [Aug'37][Scribbly in ad only]-68pg-c2c     -Teto7totoro
Popular Comics #022 [Nov'37][Scribbly in ad only]-68pg-c2c     -Tetoytotoro
Popular Comics #027 [Apr'38][Scribbly in ad only]-68pg-c2c     -Teto7totoro

Ok, Uploading "Dell_Scribbly.cbz" even as I type this.  The file contains the Scribbly comics (no ads or contest pages) from the following issues:

Popular Comics 6-9
The Funnies 4, 8-14, 16-19, 22-26, plus the covers to 21 and 26.

With the exceptions of the Popular Comics and The Funnies 4, 9, 12, and 26, all scans are by me.  I don't know who did the others for sure; I believe Teto7totoro did some.  (I have a comicless copy of the cover to 21; since it's the first Scribbly cover it's pretty much the only comicless cover where I actually care that I have a copy.)  If anybody has copies of the Scribbly pages from The Funnies 2, 3, 5-7, 15, 20-22, 27-29, or better copies of the #26, I would love to see them so I can upgrade the file.  It's still 38 of the 65 pages of Scribbly material Mayer did before moving to DC; and I personally think the material gets even more impressive when you have enough to see the continuity Mayer was working on.

Teto7totoro did some very nice scans for Funnies 15 and 26 Eric.  Perhaps you missed them?
I'll add them to the site tonight.  That's all I've got from your wanted list.

The_Funnies_15 and 26 by Teto7totoro are both on the site.
I wont add your Dell Scribbly collection until you have time to see if these will help.

Say the word and I'll add the collection to the site.

That's wonderful, Yoc.  Hold off on posting my file, then.  Once my download quota resets I'll grab them and update my version.

Narfstar:  Yes, Dell had Scribbly for almost 3 years before he moved to DC; the character first appeared almost two years before Superman.  When Gaines and Mayer stopped packaging books for various publishers and started All-American, they raided the Funnies for quite a few features.  Scribbly, Mutt and Jeff/Cicero's Cat, Reg'lar Fellers/Daisybelle , and Ben Webster all moved right over; Scribbly continued without even missing a month.  I don't know what the Funnies brought in as replacements with #30 other than John Carter; but that's where the swap over was.

That's why the early Scribblys are made to look like strip reprints, so they would fit in better.  I've heard rumors that Mayer didn't even have permission at first; he just stuck them in because he wanted to.  The character was apparently doing relatively well for Dell; he made it on to two covers (21 and 26) and was regularly listed on the cover the last year or so.

Ok, I've uploaded the updated Dell_Scribbly.cbz to the FTP.  Current Contents of the file are Scribbly pages (Story and Covers only, no ads or contests) from:

Popular Comics 6-9 (Scanner unknown)

The Funnies 4, 8-19, 21 (Cover only), 23-26 (4 scanned by unknown; 9, 12, 15, 26 by Teto7totoro; all other scans by OtherEric)

If anybody has the pages from the missing issues, let us know.  At this point I would be pleased with scans of 4th generation B&W photocopies; just so we can follow the holes in the story.  Even with gaps, this is still a very fun read.

And don't worry; getting my entire issues scanned and up is still at the top my list.  Scribbly is the undisputed highlight of the books but there is a lot of other fun stuff in these issues.  And if JonTheScanner posts the scans he has as well, we'll have a full year's worth (8-19) of a monthly comic pre-Action #1 in paper scans on the site.  I find that an incredibly cool concept on general principles.

Generally, I keep to myself on these topics, but Scribbly is a great strip that I never gave any thought to before.  Thanks for collecting it and highlighting it in its own "book."

And like most Golden Age books, the story behind the strip is as interesting as the comic itself, for those who don't know it (Toonopedia has a better summary than I'd be able to write, so go yonder).

Pictorial_Romances_10.cbz uploaded to the FTP.

To quote Overstreet:  "All Matt Baker issue."  Which really says it all, doesn't it?  ;D

I'll have more stuff either later tonight or tomorrow; I'm about halfway through the Funnies 8; after that comes Target 6/2 and Funnies 11.

I'm sure I will enjoy my VIP status once I stop being busy scanning and start downloading in bulk again; thank you very much.

I dug through my box of semi-random Golden age books; here's a list of what I have that we don't seem to have yet.  With the couple of exceptions I mention on this list, I haven't gone through the couple dozen Fawcett books I have yet.  So there are probably at least a couple more from there.  And there are probably a few more I have hidden other places; but this added to the few I've already promised to do is the bulk of the books I'll have to scan for now.  This will still keep me busy for weeks; but at least people can a) tell me if something already is out there and b) tell me if they want something on the list put higher in the order.  So, in completely random order:

Jumbo Comics #39 (Coverless)
All-Famous Police Cases #16
Shocking Mystery Cases #52
Web of Mystery #19
Sparkling Stars #11
Prize Comics #54
Four Favorites #30
Famous Stars #6
Police Line-Up #1 (Wood, 1pg)
Hit Comics #51

Crack Comics #9 (Coverless)
Crack Comics #37
Feature Comics #90 (Doll Man)
Blue Bolt V5 #04
Exciting Comics #25

A few books which I can upgrade from Fiche to Paper, but will generally require slight Fiche fills from the copies already up:

Air Fighters #8
Wings Comics #3
Captain Marvel Adventures #30
Whiz Comics #8

And, in the "Don't upload from this publisher without checking first" department:

Black Cat Mystery #39
I have quite a few issues of Animal Comics, Pogo, and other books from Dell by Kelly; but I suspect that those are not so much needed to be scanned as we're being very careful about what we post.  We do have quite a bit of Kelly posted, though.  So I thought I would at least ask.

Now to go scan the last 12 pages of The Funnies #8; it will be up before I go to bed.

Wow Eric, what a really nice variety of books you got there!
*drool*
I think we are birds of a feather when it comes to GA books.
:D

I'll go down the list and let you know what's not been scanned yet - (as far as I know)
Needed books will be in RED:

Jumbo Comics #39 (Coverless)
All-Famous Police Cases #16
Shocking Mystery Cases #52
Web of Mystery #19
Sparkling Stars #11
Prize Comics #54
Four Favorites #30

Famous Stars #6  -  sorry, no clue if this one is needed
Police Line-Up #1 (Wood, 1pg)
Hit Comics #51

Crack Comics #9 (Coverless)
Crack Comics #37
Feature Comics #90 (Doll Man)
Blue Bolt V5 #04
Exciting Comics #25
-we only have a couple stories from this one.

A few books which I can upgrade from Fiche to Paper, but will generally require slight Fiche fills from the copies already up:

Air Fighters #8
Wings Comics #3
Captain Marvel Adventures #30
Whiz Comics #8
  -  all of these would be MOST welcome replacements for the fiche scans out there!

And, in the "Don't upload from this publisher without checking first" department:

Black Cat Mystery #39 - NOT NEEDED - hey I found one!  Hurray!  lol

I have quite a few issues of Animal Comics, Pogo, and other books from Dell by Kelly; but I suspect that those are not so much needed to be scanned as we're being very careful about what we post.  We do have quite a bit of Kelly posted, though.  So I thought I would at least ask.
[I'd truly LOVE to see more of his Animal Comics Eric.  I'm a HUGE, second generation Kelly fan!!]

*************************

As for preferences I know the Quality and Fiction House books have a lot of fans of the site.  And any horror/crime books usually go over well too.   ;D

A wonderful list that I certainly look forward to perhaps one day seeing scans of!

Take care Eric,
-Yoc
