But I am now in Jim's corner (maybe it's the name) and 100% against guesses. I just do not see the reason for them at all.

To all parties concerned:

If a "Puritan Order" is to police scanners and supporters here at GAC/GA-UK in an attempt to pester a conformity of thought regarding scanning and the results of said scanning, such forces should not count me an ally to their cause.

I beseech and encourage every scanner and contributor in this community to maintain a commitment to creative and exciting inquiry regarding their efforts, rather than see anyone crippled by the inertia of "Thou shalt not guess at all."

With the aid of the Hoary Hosts of Hogarth and the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak, this will be my last comment in Jon's thread on this matter even if I have to bite my tongue in two.

Respectfully yours,
B.  >:(

Uploading now a replacement for Top Notch #6 (MLJ).  This is based on the same scan already here.  I've added two missing pages scanned from fiche and the back and inside back cover.  These are from another MLJ comic but verified by fiche to be identical including the department number on the coupon.

Also uploading Johnny Law #2.  Overstreet identifies this as Lev Gleason / Good comic so I'd suggest it be put with the Comics House / Lev  Geason comics.

This is a JVJon scan.

Thanks Jon, both are now up.  I'm using the reconstruction label again for purists but I think you can't get much closer to the real deal short of the original.

Great job!

Oh, agreed.  Every scanner has to make their own decision on what is right for their scans.  I don't even begin to pretend I have the answers, or that they're right for everybody.  I'm just glad we're asking the questions at this point, even if we don't agree the discussion is good.

Who says we don't agree the discussion is good?
heh heh 'That's a joke son, I say that's a joke'.

Just referencing how easy it is to misconstrue communication on both the giving and receiving ends in this cyber world with something as simple as a comma.
I think for the most part we are all workers of gentlemen/gentlewomen disciplined behavior and appreciative of one another as caretakers of the medium and value the opinions of each other.

And speaking of each other, I see there are a number of posters that are uploading some great stuff and I have no idea who they are or what they do. I suppose some might like their privacy in the hobby and that's fine but I see guy's like Doc, JVJ nd others that even post their photo. Wonder if that might be an interesting thread on a who's who type of thing for the posters of Gauk?
hmmm, seem I be involved in hijacking JonTheScanner's thread here. Sorry guy's but I got all this typed out already.

My detailed description was a bit tongue in cheek.  I have certainly uploaded comics in the past which were just as much reconstructions as this.  For a while I was scanning a lot of IW comics for example.  As I mentioned I still have a set of ads which IW used and reused.  Rather than scan and edit the same pages again I'd use one done previously.  I've done this on most of my Quality scans as well (though for Quality it's usually only the bc ibc that can be used).  In the case of Quality, I do this because one back cover might be in much poorer shape than another.  For my own personal saving, I often substitute in for damaged ads or covers.

Many many scans here have Heritage covers.  In fact personally I always look for a Heritage cover before I even bother to scan the front cover I've got since my comics tend to be of lower condition than any Heritage comic.

I really think "reconstruction" should be saved for those times when someone has identified an ifc or ibc by reading through the Heritage cover, or for when some missing interior page is replaced by a reprint

I want to thank everyone for being so civil in this discussion.  I've heard nightmare stories of other boards turning into flame wars over a lot less.
Jim, reconstructions are pretty rare and Jon has been diligent about telling people when they are being done by him.  So 99.9% of the time you can safely download a scan and get an original.  Fiche scans by Darkmark and others are also being used to complete books and are from originals.

-Yoc

I'm a "civil" kind of guy, Yoc,
I'll walk away from a confrontation rather than fan the flames. There was some guy who was really flaming me and Steve Saaf for an exchange we had regarding Vince Colletta and Steve was all for telling him why he was wrong. I stopped participating in the "discussion" and asked Steve to simply ignore it, too. I think he did.

My take on those things is along the lines of that old saying: When you wrestle with pigs, you both get dirty and the pig likes it.

PLEASE, this is NOT to say that ANYONE here falls into the category of liking to fight (especially this is not a comment or dig at boox909). In fact, I second your applause for the tone of the discussion. It's been a pleasure to openly talk about concepts and concerns without fear of a flame war.

And I won't stop thinking about the future of scan sites and how they are going to impact the collecting and research of comics. Already we're seeing people who rely on the GCD for data for articles and Greg Sadowski was telling me that he used GAC-UK for guidance in books he wanted to see in my collection and companies he wanted to focus us. It falls into what the Car Talk Guys call "The Department of Unintended Consequences." Your INTENT is posting PD scans to share the fun of old comics does NOT limit the site to only that function. I think it's good to be aware of and speculate on those other uses - most of which will probably surprise us ALL because we never in a million years could have conceived of them.

It pays to have an open (and civil) mind.

Just to chime in on the "purity" of scans, long after the fact--and I apologize in advance if I bring the argument back to the surface.

Basically, I don't mind reconstructed books, except for a couple of things.  I think it's kind of a waste of effort and bandwidth to produce, upload, and download it when you can more easily just post a comment that "hey, the missing pages are probably here."  Also, since I kind of blindly download everything and sort out the details later...well, that bad organization is nobody's problem but my own, but it's annoying to find out that I have two or three different versions of the same book and need to guess at what's going on.

By contrast, I also don't mind partial books.  I'd like as much of it that's available, of course, but I'll also take what I can get.

As for the research issues...well, there are sources that claim more credibility than we do hawking worse information.  I understand that it's nice when everything is perfect, but to believe that a (really, no offense to anybody) bunch of random scanners are producing research-quality materials is sort of naive.  I'd prefer it if everything were clearly documented, but I also would never expect it.

I'm uploading Red Circle #4b.  It's a JVJon scan and a different version than the one we already have.  Red Circle #4 was, I believe, only published with remaindered (or reprinted) interiors inside the covers.

The interiors we have are Advs into Terror (Atlas) #3.  This is different.  It must be some issue of Dorothy Lamour. Each page says
Dorothy Lamour across the top.  The first page of the first story is missing.  At the time, Fox started their stories on the inside front cover, and Fox did publish Dorothy Lamour.

What is here is:

Dorothy Lamour last nine of 10 pages (they are numbered)
Dorothy Lamour "Slave Goddess" 8 pages
The Bessaris (text) 2 pages
Pirate King Featuring Dorothy Lamour Jungle Princess 6 p
Panu "Phantom Lord of Tooth and Claw" 5 pages
ad Four in 1 Bargain (Rocket Wholesale co) coupon says Dept 30-G-34
ad Fillum Fun Theater

This doesn't match either issue (#2 3) of Dorothy Lamour as indexed on GCD; nor does it match Jungle Lil #1 which the series Dorothy Lamour continued from.

Any guesses what this might be?  Perhaps an unpublished #4 of Dorothy Lamour?

Thanks Jon.
Now the question becomes - where does this belong on the site?
I personally lean toward it going into Fox with a name like:
Dorothy Lamour, Jungle Princess #unknown (Red Circle #4 reprint)

Opinions?

Except it apparently never was published as a Dorothy Lamour comic so it's not a reprint  :-).  If you put it under Fox, I'd say something more like "apparently never released by Fox." or "Probably an unpublished #4"

Anyone who ever thought the history of comic books was straight forward would be beating their heads against the wall when encountering this kind of book, Jon.
Seems that there is still a LOT to be sorted out, especially in the late 40s. Thanks for this last tidbit. I never knew that the Dorothy Lamour interior was unpublished. Does that mean that there is an inside front cover 'page 1' that we'll never see?
