This is interesting. I've never had much interest in Hopalong Cassidy comics, so I never noticed that Fawcett's Bill Boyd comics, featuring the actor but not his Hoppy character, ran simultaneously with their Hopalong Cassidy series. This annual reprints stories from both series, so Hoppy's name is re-lettered to "Bill" in some stories and not others (I noticed one "Topper" sneaked through referring to Bill's horse.

What I wonder is why Fawcett, having licensed Hopalong Cassidy since 1943, decided to issue a non-Hoppy Bill Boyd comic. They'd still have to pay licensing fees to the same company.

Probably because Hoppy was so popular back then, they could make money off BOTH a Hopalong Cassidy and a Bill Boyd comic.  Remember PETER PARKER, THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN?

Yes, Dark, it's so simple you're probably right.
