Hi everyone!
This time I posted a shorter compilation, just a little less than 30 pages, about a bizarre character I stumbled upon while making my Amazing Man compilation. He's a bit of an unusual superhero, both for his powers and his modus operandi: he carries around a radio-like device that enables him to completely remove light and heat around him. He's one of the most original superheroes I've ever seen, honestly.

I think this idea was used in a movie serial, TheInvisible Monster? The ray machine was in the back of a truck and when the henchmen trained the beam on the villan, he became invisible.
I need to re-watch The Purple Monster Strikes 'cos I seem to remember something similar in that one. But it's been a while since I saw either.

FraBig, thanks for this compilation. A quirky superhero with bizarre powers--you can't beat that! I wonder how useful his gimmick would have been in the long run, given the giant column of blackness that followed him around. He wouldn't have had much luck sneaking up on crooks. It's funny how King gets a smackeroo from the movie star ("That's the first real reward this invention has brought me!") and that ends his career. I've heard rumors that King and Gloria Glamour married and he retired from crime fighting to go into the frozen food business.

First time I ever went to see a film, [By myself, I must have been 8 or 9 - small country town]  I don't remember the film, but I do remember the serial, 'Deadwood Dick'
Which unfortunately is on YouTube only in single chapters.

It just occurred to me that we have another member of Darkness royalty onsite: the Duke of Darkness, an oddball supernatural hero. So we have the King of Darkness and the Duke of Darkness...that still leaves room for the Earl of Darkness, the Count of Darkness and of course the Queen, Princess and Duchess of Darkness.

Speaking of the DoD, one of my favorite fourth-wall-breaking lines comes from his first story. The police arrest the Duke and he sasses back at them, leading one of the cops to think, "All these comic book heroes think they are better than the police force. Bah! Oh, well, at least he's not a Captain Something-or-Other." Collection here:

The Count of Darkness?

Here's a new compilation, another step forward in my project to compile every single MLJ superhero. This time it's Captain Commando, one of the few patriotic MLJ superheroes (together with the Shield and Captain Flag).
Much like DC Comics' Guardian, he is aided by a group of teenagers called the Boy Soldiers. In Guardian's case they're called the Newsboy Legion. Seems like it was a common trope to have a group of teenage fans of a superhero follow him during his adventures. A similar situation happened with Golden Age Mr. Terrific, too.

The art is for the most part by Irv Novick, one fo the main artists at MLJ and one of my Golden Age favourites.
